There was no set time for the races to start. But out of a courtesy NASCAR starts the races after church on Sundays. So the 12 or 12:30 start is the earliest to start the race.

Most of the folks here are correct. The France Empire is trying to target times when they think there will be more of a home viewing audience. This was the main reason for starting the Daytona 500 later. (Start during the day and finish at night) However, with that race, they failed to realize how cold it is for us fans sitting up in the stands with ice hanging off of our whisker biscuits. They keep trying to cater to the west coasters, as well. However, with boring tracks such as California Speedway, Infineon, and Phoenix, NASCAR needs to focus on bringing exciting racing to the west coast before they screw with everyone else's viewing schedule. Most of the drivers aren't fond of it. If they are going to start racing later on Sundays, just do what they use to do in the old days: race EVERY Saturday night instead of just a few. As soon as the fans start speaking up and demanding removal of the NASCAR Nazis of Brian France and Mike Helton, NASCAR has CHANCE at regaining it's greatness.

Growing up in the south, races use to start after 1pm when I was growing up, so people could go to church and get home in time for the race, then Nascar grew and became more popular, they started them later, heck I live in Calif now, yep, I'm up at sometimes 7:30 to watch race day then the races come on around 10-11 which is fine with me.. Races out here should start late in the day, cause its hot out here for summer races, we all roasted out here for the Sept race last yr.. I love night racing the best..

I think they need to at least start them where the entire race can be finished before the sun sets. If not, it should be run at night. I think it's very dangerous when they have to drive while the sun is setting. They show the camera angles during the race, and there is no way that those drivers can adequately see. It's a wonder there aren't more wrecks during sunset times.

Probably to respect the fans that go to church since a vast majority of Nascar fans are Christians. But night races are da bomb!

The short answer, NASCAR doesn't want to start the races too early for the west coast viewers. Crazy huh?

Have you ever seen the lines at the merchandise trailers at a Nascar event??? The later they start, the more money is spent!

To accomodate west coast viewers. I am on EST but I enjoy the late starting times because I get up late.

With many time zones of race fans they are mostly trying to allow for the largest viewership possible.
