Why do officers wear their rank on the flash and EMs wear a regimental crest? Can an EM wear his rank? What do WO's wear?

I figured there was an actual regulation. I realize regulations are one very valid answer, but I was hoping to learn more about the traditions behind the regulation. I'm assuming the tradition started back in the day when the SF only wore berets, and the berets themselves were not regulation.

No, an enlisted Soldier wears the DUI of his unit. Warrant Officers also wear their rank insignia. Why? Because AR 670-1 specifies that it is done this way.

Officers (both commissioned and warrant) wear their rank in the flash. Enlisted wear their unit crest (distinguished unit insignia). I've been trying to research where this originated but haven't found anything except the regulations that say "do it this way". I've left some links, if you have some time you might find more than I did in them.

Same for the Air Force, besides we don't have WO's.
