I have been hearing rumors about it over the past couple of months. If so, are there ways to get out of it? For example, I heard that if you are an only son, the only way you can get in is by volunteering, and they can't force you into it. Also, will the draft apply only to men or to women also?

By the way, I am hearing these rumors through people involved in or who have ties to the army which is why I am asking-just to make sure.

Also I am not concerned about avoiding the draft it's more for my little brother - they already have my older brother.

I am fine with women fighting as well-once again I a just looking for comfirmation. I've said it before and i'll say it again- everything I've heard so far were rumors and I want to hear other sides of the story which is why I posted the question.
I can see the draft come back seeing as no one wants to volunteer anymore. That would be the oonly reason why it makes sense to me.

AinePrie: look I'd fight if I had to but you don't need to say that- I know what you're trying to say, after all I did mention that my brother is out there too. I have nothing but respect for the troops and I have always felt that way whether or not someone I know is out there.

yes no one wants to volunteer. that's great if you made your goal but where i am not everyone supports the war, and therefore does not want to give up their lives for it.

No! The only one interested in reinstating the draft is Congressman Charles Rangel of New York. No one else in the Congress has signed on to his idea. He wants it because there is double-digit unemployment among the males 18-26 years of age in his district. He looks on it as a jobs program. No one in any of the military branches or in the civilian leadership in the Department of Defense wants it!.
Despite that, there will be others to pose the same question here for the umpteenth time.

There is no plans for a military Draft. The military doesn't want it. Politicians won't vote for it because it would be political suicide. The Draft as it is now is through the Selective Service program. All males on their 18th birthday are required to sign up or lose access to federal and state programs. The only son rule is no longer part of law. And what would be the point of a draft if you could get out of it by not volunteering? Currently the selective service only applies to able bodied men, although I think that should be amended to include women as well.
So again just to reiterate. THERE IS NO DRAFT.

The military cannot re-instate, the President cannot re-instate the draft ad neither has talked about or requested the draft be re-instated. The military does not want or need the draft re-instated. The only way the draft can be re-instated is if Congress votes that it be re-instated and they will not do it. Who ever in the military you know that is telling you that does not know what they are talking about. A few Congress people have talked about re-instating the draft to get demographic representation between the military and civilian population and some other political people have talked about it because of the need for manpower in Iraq-both groups are against the war in Iraq and are using it as a political scare tactic to get votes. Since you have nothing to run on you get people scared of the other person and that way they vote for you. The worst of sleazeball politics. The draft is not being re-instated any time soon.

The Military has NO plan for a draft.
The Military hates the draft.
The Military is PROUD to be an all volunteer force.
We are also meeting our mission for enlistments and if we don't we will raise pay or bonuses.
The Democrat Party has a plan (proposed by REP Charles Rangle of NY)
But he only introduced it to feed the lie that the draft is coming back.

no draft... bad politics. but if there were a draft, being the only son will not get you out of it. if you were the last male in your family to have your last name.. then you MIGHT not have to go. Yes, the draft would apply to women. women fought so hard to be equals, and now you want to be singled out because your different???? women proudly serve our country and some do it better then men do! buck up and get used to the real world.. or move to Canada. have fun eh.

i always answer this kind of question the same way ... im ready for the hate email that will come with this answer.
I HOPE THEY START THE DRAFT SOON!!!!!!!!!
those of you who have read my other responses know why ...
those of you who havent, im in recruiting now, a draft would line people up arounf the corner to volunteer for what they want before they get drafted for something they dont. therefore making recruiting a snap. they certainly wouldnt need my services any longer and could go back to the real army where things make sense.
ok start the hate email now!

Hope they do bring back the draft. I did my time in the service because of my respect and love of my country. Time for a lot of people to grow up and serve. Equal rights my friend. Women can do things for their country just as men. Even if it's not on the front lines. I also have heard of no plans to reinstate the draft.

The selective service system exist for that purpose if needed. There should be a two year commitment to some kind of national service to help teach young people some discipline and structure. It wouldn't hurt a bit.

Has no one heard of the Selective Service? You signed up when 18 and unless you fail to read anything you sign, this IS THE DRAFT. It never went away, it was simply renamed. You are eligible for the draft until 26. I am amazed that no one in America realizes this.

they are thinking about it but nothings official yet. i am the only son in the family but i still had to sign the papers like everyone else. hell even my friend had to sign the selective service papers and he is blind out of his right eye which was weird because i heard you didnt have to register with the selective service if you had that kind if disability.
i dont get why the girls would be worried. they arent the ones that will be drafted if there is one
