I am 14 and my mom recently told me that long before she met my father, her husband of 20 years, she had a one night stand that resulted in her contracting herpes. I was thinking about it recently and I was wondering if I have herpes too. I asked her and she laughed and said no, but I still wonder. I am too embarrassed to go to a doctor, so please share what you think! Thanks!

Herpes can get passed to a baby during child birth, but only if there is an active outbreak. Had there been an active outbreak at the time, they would have performed a c-section on your mom to protect you. You are fine.

WiserAngel is correct. There is more information given at the site below.

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). A related virus, HSV-1, causes cold sores. Herpes varicella/zoster is a different virus. You can't get genital herpes from having chicken pox.

herpes is caused by the varicella virus, if you had chicken pox, you have the virus. Usually it results in cold sores on the mouth and face, but can be self transmitted to the genitals if you don't wash your hands after touching your face and then go to the bathroom and touch yourself down there. No, your mom did not give you herpes.
