In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant that comes here in good faith becomes an American & assimilates himself to us,he should be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, birth place or origin but this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American & nothing but an American. There can no divided alegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag.We have room but for one language here & that is the Engliah language, & we have room but for one loyalty, & that loyalty is to the American people. End of story!!!

This is a quote from one of our presidents of the U.S.A. I just thought I'd post it to remind us who we are & of what kind of cut we are. America love her or leave!!!

I believe that Pres. Roosevelt was well aware & not referring to culture, but assimilation loyalty, language & flag, This is not referring to our culture but our hearts, we most make these three qualities our priorities regardless of our back ground.

Ms. Tehabwa, can you imagine a world without the U.S.A.? This is a country that in 200 yrs. prospered & became one of if not the most powerfull country in the world, a country that continues to extend it's helping hand to the whole world in friendship. Yet we have even in our midst people that want to destroy it because things aren't being done the way they see fit, the American way has prospered without any interfferance, why do you all want to change her. There is a saying that goes, If it ain't broke why fix it? I want my Country Back!!!

It's pretty cool when you reprove someone & they get so upset that they pull out their post knowing that they were wrong. And I give them credit for that. My regards Mr. Mata

Love It!!! I don't recognize the quote but it is definitely well-worded. Not sure what to think about the answer above and the notion that it is "not a matter of divided allegiance but ??"... I'll be enjoying all the foods brought here by those whose hearts and devotions became utterly American, though the bounties of their culture enriched the life we all benefit from.
IMHO, it is most DEFINITELY a matter of loyalty, allegiance, devotion, respect and, above all, law.

Well, there are a lot of reasons to immigrate, such as escaping a hellish home. There's no reason to demand of them all that they reliquish their original citizenship.
Nor is there any reason people should have to abandon their culture and individuality to become identical to everyone else. There's a little thing called freedom that comes into play here.
Besides, insisting that everyone be identical to everyone else "in every facet" is misguided and would be boring. Not to mention impossible.
Why does each person have to be only one thing? Any one label you give anyone is a gross oversimplification.
Thus, although I'm an American, I'm also a woman, and a northern Californian, and a human being, and of Euopean extract (of various countries). Why pretend I'm none of those other things, when clearly I am?
Although it would be nice if everyone learned English, that's simply not possible for everyone. Some people are really lousy at learning new languages late in life (past the language-learning years). What would be better would be for more to learn more languages. Especially when young, when it's much easier.
Those were never universally held values. Losing them is a GOOD thing to a great extent.
BTW, a lot of people who come here to work are caught and sent home, even though we need their labor. How fair is that?

If you wanna run for president, you got my vote. Why don't our ELECTED officials have enough common sense to feel like you do ??? American-Japanese families were imprisoned, at the loss of their homes and businesses, during WW2, and they were guilty of NOTHING except their heritage. They were LOYAL AMERICANS, fighting and dying for this country, and that's how they were treated. We ( our government ) did that to them under the premise of 'national security"...Maybe they felt they had good reason, I do not know... Why now, when illegal aliens are FLOODING OUR COUNTRY , do they not act with the same zeal ??? THIS IS A THREAT TO OUR NATIONAL SECURITY !!! Is it possible someone ( many people ) are making a huge amount of money to look the other way?? Why, do you suppose, that our Government is not taking IMMEDIATE STEPS to correct this situation??? GREED...GREED...GREED... I think the answer to your question is some people put their own agenda above their sense of patriotism... It should not take a 9/11 tragedy to make you proud to be an American, or to have your country's best interests at the forefront... When will the politicians act with OUR BEST INTERESTS at heart ??? WILL THEY EVER, OR DO THEY BELIEVE THEY ARE ABOVE OUR WILL ???

I would have to disagree. American values are based on "something for everyone" This country was founded by immigrants, many of them taking several generations to assimilate, why should we hold current immigrants to a higher standard than our ancestors?
Its not about a divided allegiance, it is about retaining an individual CULTURE. You can't expect a Chinese immigrant to give up eating rice and start eating hamburgers every day, any more than you or I would want to give up pizza and burgers ourselves.
