I travelled to the northwest US on business and I was taken to a restaurant that also served very interesting food. Apparently, I was told that it was popular in that region of the states...they eat squirrels, possums, bear, and they even sold candy coated scorpions.

With that being said, why is it disgusting that asians eat dogs, snakes and bugs if some some americans share a taste in these "exotic and odd" foods.

The answers are subjective as what one person finds appealing, another finds revolting.

When I went to Thailand, I knew that insects made up a major portion of the "average" Thai. When I arrived, I soon realized that it was far less people that consume insects as to what I expected. Many showed disgust towards consuming insects. What I did find is that the rural population showed a much higher percentage of insect consumption as opposed to their urban counterparts. The reason is mainly the foods they are raised with.
I enjoy insects and being North American, it is strange to my countrymen. Where as I find it strange that some people in my area go out of their way to harvest cattail tubers as I find them hard to stomach.

In Quebec, Canada they are one of the largest producers of horse meat. Many in North America find that almost offensive as a thought. This is probably due to the fact that horses are raised as pets or work animals and the stigma that is attached to horses prevent many from seeing it as a food item.

A lot of Asian cuisine doesn't include cheese. Think about what it actually is and you can see why. Asians will eat balut, raw fish and meat, and other things we might call odd, but we eat those you've mentioned and others, too. Indians ate dog and maybe still do and so do the Koreans. So on balance, we all like a little bit of the odd stuff.

The common meats are beef, pork, chicken and fish. Most Americans don't eat the animals you mentioned. However, in the US, game meat is popular but not really that common - Deer, Elk and Bear.

Also, less common is possum, squirrels, turtles... etc.

The candy scorpions are novelty candies that not many people really eat.
