Blood Pressure of 120/80 may be generally taken as normal. This may change a little from person to person. However any BP above 140/80 requires constant observation and treatment.

Optimal blood pressure is below 120/80. 140/90 is the beginning of stage I hypertension.

Doctors are being urged to be more aggressive about treating elevated blood pressure because even people whose pressure is in the range of 130's/80's are at higher risk for stroke.

It's a good idea to get a home blood pressure monitor (the kind that goes around the arm, not the wrist) and take your pressure twice a day, morning and evening, for a couple of weeks or so and keep a record of it. That will give your doctor much more valuable information than a reading here and there. Be aware too that if your blood pressure is elevated only 25% of the time, it can still damage your kidneys and other internal organs.

Check out the DASH diet at www.nhlbi.nih.gov for controlling blood pressure.
