if you test negative on a hiv test 2 months after contact, can you still test positive 1 year later?

im just asking if theres a chance i can still be sick because I heard something about some sti's will not show any signs or something for years. i just want to be sure.

Yes. The test can take as long as 6 months to give a valid result because it can take that long for your antibodies to reach detectable levels.

While most of the time, HIV (or more accurately the anti-bodies to HIV) will be detected within the first month, it is possible that you could receive a negative test after that time and still be infected. In most cases you will test positive within 6 months of infection but in very rare cases it will take longer. If you have a concern about the possibility of being infected I would suggest you talk to your doctor. There are other HIV antibody tests as well as a HIV DNA test that might yield a result sooner than the standard ELISA test would.

well good ? i just inquired about this to my local health dept and reply was that many take as up to 8 to 10 yrs to get sick .but however if u r tested u will know within 2 weeks

HIV takes a while to build up measurable levels in the blood, you need to re-test at six months and at one year. In the meantime, always always use protection.
