If he carries on like that, he'll be saying goodbye to his toes and retinas soon.
Does he want that?

Moderate drinking is fine for people with diabetes .
Moderate for men is 1-2 beers/day.
Alcohol LOWERS your blood sugar so he needs to eat when he drinks and check his blood sugar often.
You can subscribe to several diabetes magazines to him.Set him up in a diabetes support group and go with him.
Scaring people rarely help.Working with people is a much better approach.
You should help him find a new job and get him working so he has meaning in his life.
Ask him out for a walk with you.
I'll bet he is not seeing an endocrinologist.
He really needs to.Help him find a good endo.
I wish you both the best.

A combination of diabetes, lack of work and alcohol use could indicate depression. Ask him if he'll consider having a chat with his GP about how he feels about life in general.

You can either ask him not to drink so much, or maybe none at all, or you can be blunt and tell him about the severity of diabetic complications. I've suffered them and don't ever want to go through that again.

Nothing can be done outside of an intervention. However, most addicted persons will refuse intervention unless they are near the "bottom" of their using behavior. Sorry.

To improve his health he needs to stop drinking, lose weight, take regular vigorous exercise and get a job. The only person who can make these things happen is himself I am afraid.
