We're having a get-together with friends that is also to celebrate a new baby, and giving baby gifts. The pizza and salad will be from a nice restaurant in town, not a pizza place.... Any ideas.

Stuffed Mushrooms! They are quick and easy. You can buy them in the freezer section or make your own, I found this recipe.
INGREDIENTS
8 large fresh mushrooms
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cups ricotta cheese
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
4 tablespoons pesto

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Wash mushrooms, remove stems, hollow out and brush inside and out with olive oil.
In a medium-size mixing bowl, combine cheese and pesto, reserving 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese for later. Stuff the cheese-pesto mixture into the mushroom caps. Arrange the caps on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle the mushrooms with the reserved Parmesan cheese.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and brownish.

A nice antipasta platter would be great. On a large tray, try arranging some or all of the following:

1. Sopressata, fennel salami, cappicola
2. Provolone cheese
3. Pepperoncini
4. Marinated mushrooms and artichoke hearts
5. Italian olives, or olive medley
6. Green onions

or

1. Asiago and Provolone cheeses
2. Peppered salami, thinly sliced thuringer, serrano ham
3. Pickled veges, such as cauliflower, carrots, pickles, peppers.
4. Red bell pepper strips
5. Sundried tomatos

Serve with hot cheesey Italian Bread.
4.

Pizza is Italian, so here are some italina appetizers easy to make in advance:

Antipasto all'Italiana: dish full of salami, prosciutto, coppa, jam, mortadella. Acompany by bread slices

Olive Condite (Black & green Olives)

Prosciutto e Melone (Melon slices with prosciutto)

Spiedini con Uva e Formaggio (Fresh grapes and cheese on skewers)
The skewers can be placed on a dish or stuck into some fruits (apples, oranges, melons)

Tortellini Kabobs (skewers: add an olive, a cheese cube, a cubed red pepper, a tortellini (cooked), another cheese cube and another olive) See recipe:

Crostini alla napoletana (mozzarella, anchovies in oil and tomatos on toast.)

Maybe something like stuffed mushrooms and a veggie tray with 2 different dip choices. I doubt you'd want a bread or chip based appetizer because pizza is already a heavy food.

You can make great breadsticks with puff pastry. You put a sheet of it on a floured work surface and cut it into strips (a ravioli cutter or pizza cutter works great). You twist the strips and place them onto a greased cookie sheet. I like to sprinkle on chopped parsley and parmesan cheese before I bake. Bake at 425 for 7-8 minutes. As soon as you pull them from the oven, brush melted butter (or garlic butter) over top.
