Are they being treated better than those "regular" cows?

Commercial, or "regular" cows are pumped full of antibiotics, steroids, growth hormones, and other medications to help them overcome the diseases they get from being kept in such horrid conditions. Commercial milk is highly pasturized, making it nutritionally worthless, so synthetic "nutrients" are added back into it. The vitamin D in commercial milk is a steroid! Raw, organic milk is best. Commercial organic milk can be questionable, as many larger companies just set aside an area for "organic" cows, but still enrich the milk with steroids. Organic farming is not very well regulated or supervised, so companies can get away with a lot of stuff. Try to find a local dairy or food co op where you can get fresh raw milk-it contains all of the enzymes you need to digest it, and is even well tolerated by lactose intolerant or milk allergic people. Its much better for you. For more information on how dairy cows are treated, including the cruel, artificial insemination techniques used, go to factoryfarming.org and click on the dairy link. It will open your eyes!

The concept of organic was to take a more humane, natural approach to food. Unfortunately it's become another label, another big business thing. The standards for organic are dropping rapidly and places like Horizon farms (who are one of the most easily recognized organic dairy farms) have had multiple reports of cows being mistreated or not being raised according to organic guidelines. There have been multiple amandments to what organic means and the standard for organic food keeps dropping. Greed is once again rearing it's ugly head.

Calves born to dairy cows in organic farms face 2 different fates just like calves born in your 'regular' dairy farms.

Some female calves would be kept to grow to replace their 'spent' female relatives. Very few male calves are kept so humans can extract their semen in order to artificially inseminate the cows.

Most calves are either sold as veal or shot soon after birth. It is a business after all even for organic farms. So while organic milk is chemical-free and better for you than non-organic milk, calves born in organic dairy farms face exactly the same fate. Calves and their mothers are separated soon after the calves are born and it's very cruel.

Because it is a business for organic and non-organic farms, when the milk productivity starts to go down when the cows are 5 years old, they get slaughtered and made into beef stock or processed meat products.

Dairy and veal/beef industry go hand in hand even in an organic farm. They have to make money.

Organics are better in dairy and meat because the animals are not given all the growth hormones etc. We still dont know what effect all these additives will have on humans long term.

I prefer organic milk/dairy. It doesn't contain the steroids and antibiotics that non-organic milk contains. I have no idea if they're being treated better...it depends on the dairy farmer.

Better than what? Conventional? Yeah. Healthier is not synonymous with healthy though. And they aren't treated much better than conventional-milk cows. They're still impregnated by force, their babies are still taken away, the boys going to veal crates. They're still artificially forced to produce way too much milk, they're still pumped by machines, and they still go to slaughter as soon as they're no good to the farmer.
