Not only would it be taxing to the heart, but to all other systems in your body. Lack of sleep can make you seriously ill or kill you.

The heart is a continous thing and always on the move.

However, lack of sleep can cause high blood pressure and increase heart rate. The body relaxes and the heart reduces it's heart rate during sleep.

Other sleeping disorders can cause worse affects. So it depends.

Lack of slepp leads to a build-up of stress, which inevitably places more strain on the heart. Added to this is the fact that the heart has to do more work while we are awake than asleep. All of this can add up to sever complications if we do not follow normal sleep patterns.

Poor sleep over a long period of time can create stress. Any stress for too long, be it good stress or bad stress can be harmful to the cardiac muscles and functions of the heart if a person has a proclivity to that! There have been studies that irregular work shifts can be hazardous to cardiac health.
