I'm 42yo, both of my paternal grandparents had Diabetes Type 2, my father is borderline and holding steady with diet, I have Native America blood, I've been obese for 14 years, don't exercise or eat especially well. My dr. regularly checks my fasting blood sugar yearly - last time was about May or June '07 and it was 100 on the dot. He wasn't concerned. My mother, a former diabetes nurse educator WAS concerned.

For the last two years I've taken lithium, which tended to dehydrate me. I've been off lithium for a month and am now on Effexor, Risperdal, and Vistaril.

I'm still immensely thirsty and have to go to the bathroom a lot. I feel dehydrated a lot and have problems with constipation all the time. I'm hungry all the time. I recently GAINED 10 pounds due to overeating during an extended depressive episode.

Should I make an appointment and insist on another fasting glucose and an A1C?

Thoughts, comments?

I eat prunes quite a bit because they are one of my favorite foods. I also eat apples, oranges, raisens, pineapple, various berries, and more.

I have diabetes. It doesn't make you dehydrated. It just makes you think you are, because you feel thirsty all the time. Then because you aren't actually dehydrated and you just drank all those liquids, you have to use the bathroom alot. If your doctor still insits that you aren't diabetic, here is what I suggest. Try to prevent getting it, or making it worse. By following a good diet, your doctor should be able to make suggestions. Cutting out all sugary drinks is a good start. Also, testing your blood sugar levels 3 times a day for 2 days should give you a better idea if you actually are diabetic. If you have a way to test it, write it down and show them to your doctor.

Many of the symptoms you list can be caused any of the medication you are already taking. Read the side effects
page you get from the pharmacy.

The constipation can be solved with a glass of prune juice or prunes daily. It works very well. And much more comfortable than taking something else.

It would be smart to get an A1C done since you know diabetes could be a possibility. And of course you know losing the weight would be smart.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays.

You are right to be concerned. Some of your meds are probably causing the problem, but the fruits you are eating are not the best? They are the high sugar ones.

To set your mind at ease, Walgreen Drugs sells the Side Kick glucose monitor. It is about $30 and disposable. Has about 50 test strips and is good for about 90 days after opening. Also make appointment with the doctor to have A1c for your peace of mind. Tell him it is for your and your mother's peace of mind.

With your background, weight, etc. you are so right to be concerned. Try to get more exercise, try to lower grams of carbohydrate, and don't believe them when they tell you to go fat free diet to loose weight!! It keeps you from feeling so very hungry!!! Put butter on your toast or tortilla, drink whole milk, eat cheese for snacks. Balance your plate 1/3 each protein, fats and salads (aka carbohydrates).

Want to her a fact? Not feeling thirsty is a symptom of dehydration. If you don't feel thirsty, it will make you dehydrate even more. Drink even though you aren't thirsty, or do exercise or running to make you thirsty. Beleive me I had the same problem, keep drinking and eventually drinking 2 huge bottles of water will be easy.
