Hi. You don't say if this is a result of a virus/illness or over use of your voice. Having just suffered from Laryngitis resulting from a virus (Parainfluenza) I can tell you what I did that helped.

Because laryngitis is a result of inflammation of the voice box and breathing tubes in your throat, using an inhaler (ProAir albuterol) and Respaire caps (pseudoephedrine and Guaifenesin ) really reduced the inflammation and my voice went back to almost normal that next day. Of course, I went to the Dr. to get the prescriptions. I was amazed at the effectiveness of these medicines.

Also, really helpful was cold air--taking a walk at night felt fabulous. Hot steamed bathroom with a running shower--washing the dog. Humidifier at night with mentholated essential oils just gave some relief but not enough to cure the sound of my voice. Mint tea with honey was pleasant but again, not that effective with my voice.

Good luck.

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx, usually due to a virus or overuse. The result is acute change in the voice, with decreased volume and hoarseness. Diagnosis is based on clinical findings. Laryngoscopy is required for symptoms > 3 wk. Viral laryngitis is self-limited. Other infectious or irritating causes may require specific treatment.
Because most common laryngitis is caused by a virus, treatment with antibiotics may not help. Your health care provider will make this decision.
Voice rest helps by reducing the inflammation of the vocal cords. A humidifier may soothe the scratchy feeling that comes with laryngitis. Decongestants and pain killers may relieve symptoms of an upper respiratory infection, if present.

Try gargling with a little warm salt water.

Also squeeze three or four fresh lemons into a saucepan, more if you want to make a bigger quantity. Add about two and a half cups of water. Add honey to sweeten and add a little piece of ginger to it. Let it simmer for a while and sip before bedtime. Have some moisture in your room when you sleep, a small humidifier will keep the air moist around you.

Even putting Vicks Vapor Rub up and around your throat and down to your chest and on your back across your lungs, will help you breath easier.

Do all these things and it should zap it and you can be back up singing in no time.

(If it's painful either coated aspirin or tylenol).

Too many lozenges can make your throat sore as can products with an anti histamine in them.

Good luck, I hope you're feeling better soon.

Wow that is rough, I really think your only recourse is to see a doc cause the cough you describe sounds bad! Could be more than laryngitis and some antibiotics would do wonders! Don't know if you are a smoker but cutting done would help too. And a good thing to do would be to take Vitamin C and E. Those are good anti-oxidants :) Take care :)

Don't use your voice at all. Avoid lozenges with menthol and/or camphor. That can dry out your throat. There rreally isn't much you can do, other than stay hydrated.

In addition, it is possible that you have set up bad vocal habits that predispose you to getting laryngitis. If this happens more than once, you may want to talk to a voice therapist.

complete and total vocal rest- especially DO NOT whisper which is actually harder on your vocal cords than talking! If it persists too much longer, I would go back to the Dr. Have you been checked for polyps or other things that could be causing this to last so long?

voice rest means make no sounds, and be silent it may take a week or two, nothing is as fast as a video game so just expect it to take time.
