Yes. Both came about the same time for me just about 5 years ago. Right about the time my health started going downhill. Since I've gotten on a very serious health kick, both the depression and the diabetes have become easily managed. Some might even say they're gone. You see, after much work, I quit the depression meds about two years ago and last week, I quit the diabetes meds. Sugar's normal and my attitude is better than ever. So, yes... absolutely in my case there's a strong link. All having to do with overall physical and mental health.

Yes.
Just like with other chronic illnesses, depression is seen among diabetics at a higher rate than would be considered normal in the general population.
While many diabetics may not realize it, having a chronic illness can affect their mental health. It is important to recognize and talk about openly with all people living with chronic illness. Being depressed can result in less than adequate blood sugar control.
There is an excellent autobiography called 'sweet invisible body' (I think) by a woman who has lived with diabetes and depression. Cant think of the author or the exact title. Good read. I wasn't aware that there was a connection until I first read her book which led me to others...

There does seem to be a link between diabetes and depression. At least, statistics seem to show that there's a link.
See some of the following pages to get some sort of idea about the link.

My son has had Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes since he was 4, and is now 20. He would certainly say that a lot of the depression he has suffered from is directly related to having to prick his fingers and inject insulin several times a day, INDEFINITELY! Roll on, the day when new less painful ways of testing blood sugar and giving insulin are developed for Martin and so many like him!

According to my local diabetes centre depression is more common amongst the diabetic population. Also I find that fluctuations in my blood sugars affect my mood.
