My husband is a newly found diabetic, and his sugar level is pretty high right now.

He is on 2 meds, he just started them yesterday.

He has been waiting for his sugar to get low enough to eat so it wouldnt get to high, only now we just checked and his suagr is 483 and just 3 hours ago it was 300. He hasnt ate anything, just drank sugar free hawaiian punch. It says NO sugar just Phenylalanine. Can Phenylalanine raise your blood sugar?

Thanks.

When I said "No added Sugar drinks with FAKE sugar" I was refering to diet drinks, and drinks with splenda and such in them.

No fruit juice, I do know about fruits and fruit juices have a lot of sugar in them. I do read the labels.

Thanks.

You and he cannot do the wait til the glucose levels go low!!!
It is very important to maintain a good nutrition form which means about 5 or 6 small meals spaced evenly throughout the day!!!

Yes, the liver dumps stored glucose on the system any time it feels the starvation mode coming on. This includes in the middle of the night when you are asleep!!!

I follow the South Beach diet plan with some changes. The changes are because some foods cause my glucose to really rise.

Alcohol sugars do cause some problems!! These are found in sugar free candy and drinks.

Make up a meal plan at scheduled intervals, like every 3 to 4 yours he eats a small meal or snack of 1/3 protein, 1/3 fats, and 1/3 low glucemic Carbohydrates.

I recommend you go to either library or bookstore and find:
"Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year" and/or
"Atkins Diabetes Revolution".
They will help both of you figure out what you should be doing and answer questions you haven't even thought of to ask the CDE or dietician and the danged doctors don't think of to tell you.

First of all, oral diabetes medications do take some time to become effective. It is also possible that your husband will need to be on insulin, either in the short or long term.

483 mg/dl is quite high, especially fasting. I am wondering if it is possible that he is a Type 1 diabetic misdiagnosed as a Type 2? Type 1 diabetes used to be called "Juvenile Diabetes", but adults can develop it too. Insulin is always needed to treat Type 1 diabetes, and it is rapidly fatal without it. Is your husband thin?

I would call the doctor or take him in if it does not come down. He will likely need insulin to help bring him into a safe range. He may or may not need to continue with insulin.

Fasting can cause your blood sugar to rise slightly (glycogen release from the liver), but his levels are flat out unacceptable and dangerous.

Please have him drink lots of fluids (water is best, although aspartame and other diet drinks should not affect blood sugar) and take him in if you cannot get his blood sugar down. Some Type 1 diabetics note that Splenda seems to affect their blood sugar, although it is not supposed to.

His glucose level is immediately dangerous if sustained.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.

Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!

I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

Juice contains natural sugar so even though the package may rightly claimed 'NO ADDED SUGAR' there is still natural sugar present. So it is no wonder your husbands BG's are still high. In addition drinking too much artifical sweetener isn't very good for him either.

As for BG's raising when you aren't eating (which is silly anyway) the only time your BG's will rise when you haven't eaten is first thing in the morning when the liver thrusts out a boost of sugar to help us get going with a little energy boost.

im type 2 diabetic..my sugar level gets high sometimes when i dont eat.....you should have him to drink as much water as possible to dilute the sugar content in th blood....you can seizure or go into a coma if it gets above 500 ...he should eat small meals with more protein than carbs...carbs will raise your bs very quickly...potatoes, white breads, rice, popcorn,fruits..such as pineapple, bananas, raisins, watermelon....you can become very dehyrated very fast if it gets 300 or above...also your immune system quits working when it reaches 200+...you might call the ER or his dr and get advice on what you can do for him...bluedot

with it that high you call the doctor. you also drink one glass of water and test your blood. if you do this 4 hours and it is not down to 250 then head to emergency. you could get in a coma or be very sick. its too high. good luck

Yes - last month I went several days without eating (just not interested) and in my ignorance figured I didn't need my morning and evening bolus of Levemir, I ended up in the hospital deep in DKA - scared the heck out of my son who had to use a wagon to move me to his car. I'm a LADA - came down with it in my late 50's - now insulin dependent. Don't trust the diabetes educators to tell you the whole story - they don't know it.
