I feel really tired and depressed and I don't know why. I have been sleeping a lot lately. I don't go anywhere and I just stay cooped up inside all day. When I do go out, people are mean to me and always say negative things. It is like they hate me because I am vegan and I am trying to the right thing with my life.

Being here on Yahoo! Answers is depressing also because of all the mean things people say here against me. I think they meat eaters here hate me, but I have not did anything to them. I have just tried to do the right thing and not kill animals.

If in fact this has been going on for some time, dear, I would suggest seeing someone for an eval. I have nothing to add, but clinically Meg has quite adequately offered you professional advice. I would disagree with her that your depression is likely linked to a food etiology, although in other cases that is not an uknown or uncommon cause or contributor to depression. Any dietician who says that it can't be doesn't know what they are talking about.
To the "Records Janitor" ...a non-clinical positon BTW. . . the ICD-10 used in my country and throughout Europe closely parallels the DSM-IV without using the 5-axis system . . . F-30-39 Affective Disorders list criteria similar and more detailed than the DSM-IV, While the ICD-10 does not indicate with any specificity the length of time the symptoms are to persist before taking action, common sense tells one that , months of having those symptoms before having an eval is foolhardy. Even a regular janitor using common sense would know that. Meg with a clinical degree credentialing her as a therapist would be correct in her advice.
Also, many studies have showed that different levels of calcium and magnesium often determine who is suffering from major depressive episodes or who is suicidally depressed. Other studies have showed that the absence of sufficient fish in one's diet contributes to nutrient deficiencies necessary for one's mental well-being.

You've been a complete b*tch so how you can say you haven't done anything to upset people on Yahoo Answers I don't know, pmsl!
People don't hate you because you're a vegan, people hate you because you're a nasty, spiteful, offensive, sh*t stirring idiot. You're not a vegan at all, you post false Q's to try & make veganism look bad then you churn out the same tired old insults. And sadly some people fall for it. If people look at your Q & A's they will see that you are regularly rude & insulting.
You're a very poor excuse for a human being.

Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with being a vegan. Depression can be a chemical imbalance in the brain. You should see your doctor. Also, make sure you are following the vegan diet correctly. Not getting the proper nutrition can make you tired/lethargic. So first find out if there is a physical reason for the way you are feeling. Then make friends with people who share, or at least support, your life-style. I hope you feel better soon!

I've become pretty depressed since becoming vegetarian...I have a lot of things on my mind that I didn't a year ago...a lot of visuals and a lot of knowledge...and some of it- it was a lot easier to not know. I'm trying to focus more on the positives of a vegetarian (or vegan) lifestyle, but it's not easy. I do know that staying inside is not good, and we need to get out of the house at least for a while every day- even if you have to force yourself to do it. Make sure you get up nice and early as well to absorb as much daylight as possible- I know the more daylight I'm exposed to, the better I feel. Most importantly, I would consider seeing your doctor, but if you want to try a natural supplement, I've heard Rhodiola is very good for depression. I'm thinking of getting some next week and giving it a try. Good luck.

If you have only felt that way for a few days, you might just "snap out of it."
If you feel like that for two or three months, and you feel like that almost every day, see a doctor. If you have persistent desire to harm youself or others, see a doctor right away.
I'm not trying to be funny; I have been on medication for depression since 1983 and I have worked in mental health "medical records" since 1987.
PS "Two or three months" is a perfectly good criteria, but that is a pretty good point. If you have persistent thoughts of suicide or homicide that you think you might carry out, go to a doctor immediately. (I've been there.)
I told my Dad the same thing when my mom died and he said he was "depressed."
I wasn't going to bring up the DSM-IV-TR because they don't use it in the UK.

Here is a link that may help ... believe it or not, it may be a function of your diet in part ....
http://www.thedietchannel.com/5-Natural-Ways-To-Prevent-Depression.htm
Actually, the benchmark for possible depression is not "two or three months". You could be in deep trouble by then. Clinical benchmark (DSM-IV Tr) is persistent symptoms within a two week period of either (1) depressed mood, or (2) loss of interests or pleasure; that is a change from a previous level of functionality. The physical and emotional isolation you describe suggests you may want to "check in" for an evaluation.

Sounds like SAD to me. It's common this time of year. Best cure is to expose yourself to natural light as much as possible.
