I think i just set the single question record for giving people thumbs down. wow.
Ok, of course you can, it is natural, no one dies, it is your body. I am surprised at how many people haven't heard of this practice.

You might still be able to call yourself either one. Eating the placenta is usually just a one-time event. If you can't finish the whole thing, bury it in the roots of a tree or plant & the nutrients will help the plant.
Apparently, not too many people know of this practice to eat "afterbirth". Animals do it. Humans are animals. It is good for the Mother & the infant. Especially in breatfeeding, as it adds nutrients that cannot be found anywhere else! It isn't for everyone. It isn't as gross as it sounds like it would be! You could call yourself a "cannibal for a day!" You'll most definately will be full of yourself after you eat it, that's for sure!

That's nasty.
But for an answer... it actually depends on how a person interprets the meaning of vegetarian and vegan.
Vegetarianism is essentially about eating no meat- whether it's for health, religious, or ethical reasons.
At the heart of veganism (founded by Donald Watson, who coined the term "vegan") is the prevention of cruelty to animals/living creatures. So you could say that because nothing was harmed in the process, then you could be a vegan and eat placenta, but not be a vegetarian and eat it.
Sounds ridiculous at first, but there is something to it.
I'm a vegan, but I think I'll stick to eating the "normal" foods, and pass on placenta, urine, breast milk, etc.
EWWW! :-P

I would say probably not, since the placenta carries blood, which is not vegetarian at all.
BTW, there are some cultures where the women eat the placenta, or use it for a special tea. It is said to be very high in protein and helps with breastfeeding. Personally, I'll pass on that. But thanks for offering.

you could callyourself a vegetarian and vegan and i dont see a reason not to. but just remember there are people who call themself vegans and vegetarians who are in no way shape or form anyway (think flaxterians aswell as others)
but like i said i dont see a problem as a vegan you try to minimuise your inpact on animals as much as posible and remove there suffering and explotation. eating it would not couse any of the thingss vegans try to avoid so it should be fine.
a little strainge but fine

Yes.
The point of veganism is not to avoid animal products without a reason. It's to avoid exploiting animals. A human giving their placenta would be consentual. Just like oral sex *gasp*, and breast feeding *oh noes!*.

I think the answer here is, no. Vegans do not use or consume animal parts of any kind, while vegetarians don't eat animal flesh of any kind (however there are variants on this category). Therefore, since humans are animals I think you'd be violating some major vegetarian/vegan rules! :)

It'd be hard to eat your own placenta (at least without freezer burn) being that you're a newborn when the placenta is fresh.

It is as natural as chilbirth itself in the animal world and in many parts of the globe. Amusing to see a lot of ignorant answers. Indignant, even insulting, but ignorant nevertheless. If the best that these "enlightened" vegetarians can come up with is "ewww" or " gross" or "that's just sick" and "WTF!!", then how can one take their arguments and logic seriously? It's like you've just told a bunch of 4 year olds, there is no Santa Claus. I almost expect some of them to run home crying to mommy...
