50 people? You need A LOT. Yes, I'd ask them to bring something with them (people tend to bring booze when invited to parties anyway, don't they?)
I think it's best to write an email to everybody and put it in humorous way: Say you'll provide a snack, but they should make sure they bring their favorite alcohol with...''
You shouldn't be embarrassed. it's not a dinner party for 4, it's 50 people!
You still have to have some of your own though. Buy a lot of beer and some whiskey. People will bring other.

To calculate how much drinks you need, it's usually 2-3 drinks per hour per person. So if you're having 50 people, you will need about 100-150 drinks per hour. If your friends drink A LOT, you might want to up the rate.
To ask them to bring their own, when you invite them just say "It's a Christmas party, but no need to bring any gifts! Just bring a pack/case/bottle of your favorite beer/liquor to share with everyone for the holidays :)"

How about, "I love you all, but I'm not able to provide beverage for 65 of you, so would you mind terribly bringing your own alcohol." How could you possibly know what everyone likes to drink? Otherwise, some well brands would be a potential solution(cheap vodka, whiskey, gin and some mixers)

BYOB: Bring your own booze.
If your friends are heavy drinkers and driving home, make it booze free.
You cannot cater to everyone's tastes - beer, rye, rum, vodka, gin, etc.
You can say that you will supply the Eggnog and rum and the food or snacks, depending on what kind of party it is.

I'd go with 4 bottles of vodka, 3 of rum, 1 gin, 1 brandy, 4 24 packs of beer, and some wine coolers. I also would like an invite! ;)

You can tell them that alcohol will be provided and what kind, but if there is something in particular that they drink, then it would be okay for them to bring their own.
