I'm making a chicken stir fry and the recipe calls for bok choy or nappa cabbage. I'm unable to find either one, are there any good alternatives??

It should be somewhat fancy... It's for a school project (cooking class). And yes I did look in produce, and I asked the man working in that section, along with customer service, who told me that they do not carry it.

If you can't find bok choy or nappa cabbage, look for savoy cabbage. Savoy's have a nice crinkle leaf. Also, you can use swiss chard instead of bok choy. Swiss chard has a nice broad leaf similar to bok choy.

Ok, I don't really have a recipe persay, it's just something we throw together in my house. I usually get 1 to 1-1/2 lbs of baby bok choy 1 package precut stir fry beef Garlic (4 to 6 cloves, minced) Salt Pepper Soy Sauce Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Avocado Oil Water First I put the oil, about 1 tablespoon in to a pan and heat it up. Avocado oil can take a lot of heat before smoking and is the best oil for your body & heart. Once the oil is heated I drop in the stir-fry beef (you can purchase the precut style in any grocery store meat department) lightly season with salt & pepper. When it's almost completely cook I drop in the garlic for a few moments. After that I put in all the cleaned baby bok choy in with the meat & garlic, pour a little water in for the steaming process & quickly put a lid on. I check the bok choy periodically for tenderness, and occasionally might add a tad bit more water for steaming. Once it's steamed to the desired tenderness I pour a little low sodium soy sauce in the pan (make sure you are constantly turning the bok choy during the steaming process) and then serve over rice. Enjoy!

Try an Asian market or neighborhood... If you are in area where the person speaks Chinese: Bok Choy is the Cantonese word in Mandarin it is Xiao Bai Cai (shiao bi tsi). You can see a picture below, maybe print it and show the grocer to be safe. Good luck!

Bok choy and Napa cabbage are available in all supermarkets. Ask the produce manager where it is. You might not know what it looks like. I use them both all the time in my soups along with celery.

Green cabbage, sliced very thinly.

Remember, the Chinese also use lettuce. Try Romain near the end of the cooking time which won't be long as your making a stir fry.

You should be able to find bok choy at any grocery store...if not I would use cabbage.

Did you look in the produce section..??
If you went to the grocers YOU failed to ask>>
IF your doing stir fry you should have celery,, onions,, carrots and bell peppers,, any thing else is just being fancy.
I have left over baby corn,, Bamboo shoots,, and water chestnuts,, that will be in my meat loaf...

You can use regular green (do not use red) cabbage- it will come out just fine. They’re pretty similar.
