I've been vegan since conception and was a star athlete in high school.

Anyone who tells you that you have to eat blood, pus, sh*t, and steroids to build muscle is off their rocker.

Just say you are a strict vegetarian. This is not a synonym for vegan, vegans have a strict vegetarian diet. You won't be a strict vegetarian, because a strict vegetarian eats no animal products. But it's close enough since most people never think about the hidden ingredients. But what I would like you to think about is why are insects ok to be killed for your food but not other invertebrates? Insects DEFINITELY feel pain, they are among the most advanced of all invertebrates. But there are others like oysters which perhaps don't feel pain. The trouble is EVEN SCIENTISTS DON'T KNOW FOR SURE. That is why vegans err on the side of caution and avoid anything from the animal kingdom rather than make subjective decisions on which species are ok to exploit, kill and eat. In my mind it is illogical to avoid meat because animals feel pain but then consume products from insects.

I agree with the answers pointing you to veganfitness.com and veganbodybuilding.com for support in your endeavor. It is a great place to find info and support for what you want. Some of the guys on veganbodybuilding are huge! They have powerlifters (all muscle and bodyfat), bodybuilders (all muscle and no bodyfat), and marathon runners (who use weightlifting to supplement their running regimes). Take the time to go thru some of the blogs/training logs on there.

You have to be very smart in what and when you eat though. You can't just slurp down a carbo shake or eat chicken breasts all the time. You do have to do the small meals every two to three hours for maximum gains (bean burritos seem to be their favorite. And their shakes are awesome! Although the kale one is nutrient dense, it is an acquired taste).

Most vegan bodybuilders are very healthy in what they do. Can't really say that about the other bodybuilders whose livers give out after awhile. So don't listen to "people". Only listen to the ones who have done it and have experience in it. Walk a mile in their shoes, not other "people's" who won't even hear of such shoes!

Oh yeah, it's possible.
Remember, most people are taking roids.
You'll never be as big a roid taker, but take a look at the pre-roid era muscle builders, they are pretty big. Really has nothing to do with meat intake or dairy, as you should know. Take a look at Jack LaLanne. He wasn't a vegan, but not much of a meat eater either, but no roids. http://www.jacklalanne.com/
The guy was born in 1914 so... he's 93 and still working out being the fitness guru he always was. I believe he only eats fish as far as meat is concerned. Anyway, yeah, possible.

i think those wed sites sound very interesting , i haven't seen them. but i know that the most powerful muscle building supplement is vegan , creatine. if i was a vegan trying to put on muscle id supplement with amino acids like glutamine and creatine. im a vegetarian so i can have eggs so its a bit easier for me.

soy beans have almost double the protein of beef so if you could get into sprouting them that would be awesome. sprouting makes the amino acids more easily usable for us. but iv tried doing it a few times and its hard to do it properly and they taste kind of bad not like other beans when you sprout them. im into boxing so i eat chick pea and lentil sprouts and get heaps of energy but if i was into bodybuilding i would try very hard to get into soy sprouts.

for some reason tofu losses most of the protein of the bean and ends up with 10 gm when the bean had 40. sprouting is the best it makes free amino acids your muscles will sky rocket. as long as you have a real bodybuilding program of weight training to go along with it.

Make sure you are getting LOTS of complete proteins, drinking lots of water, and you'll probably have to consume those crappy protein shakes...I assume there is a vegan variety with a soy protein.

What a fantastic idea for a book to write. If you can find a nutritionist and a pro trainer to consult with and maybe co-author, you'd have a great book on your hands, and maybe some big $$$.

I am not vegan....used to be vegetarian....not anymore....I feel better when I eat animal protein.

You will have a difficult time. A VERY, VERY, few have done it. But medical research that their body types are likely predisposed to be defined.

I'm in my mid-70's and built body mass and muscle by becoming a flexitarian vegetarian. "Meat" ... mostly fish, seafood and sometimes poultry comprises 20% of my diet. I couldn't believe how I piled on the body mass and muscle. Compared to people that are strict vegetarians and vegans, ... Well there is no comparison. They are either obese or spindly compared to me . . . and many are 30-50 years younger than me.

Jack LaLane is a former Mr. Universe, vegetarian for most of his life, and is still in remarkably good health in his 90s. Now he does infomercials for a juicer.

I would say it's possible.
