For good luck during the coming year. One is German the other one is Southern.
You also need greens as well if you go the Southern route and have black eyed peas.

It's for good luck. In Spain it's 12 grapes with the last claps of the midnight bell on the 31 of December. In Italy it's lentils 'cause they reperesent all the money you'll have in the coming year.
