We just order a lot of appetizers from a chinese or indian restaurant. If you're having a big to-do, if you have a place that sells roast chickens and side dishes nearby, this is an economical option since a single roast chicken can serve 6 to 8 people.
I'm assuming you're in France or Canada so a 3 or 6 foot sub sandwich may not be an option there, but you can easily and inexpensively make similar sandwiches yourself by taking a few long loaves of the bread the French are so famous for, splitting them lengthwise and filling them with meats, cheeses, and vegetables.
For drinks, punch (alcohol optional) is always the least expensive option. Mix a large bottle of soda water with 2 cartons of fruit juices or nectar, slice some oranges and lemons on top and you're in business. If you want to add alcohol, rum is always a good choice or wine.

Why don't you make it pot luck? If it's work related, just make a sign up sheet and have everyone write down what they're going to make. This is what my former place of work did. We'd have sections for main dishes, appetizers, desserts and drinks. But what my family does for New Year's Eve is make a bunch of munchies, including crab legs. We'd get some hot wings, queso from Chili's, beef stick and crackers, just a bunch of different things to munch on. We've been doing this for years.

I would think in that environment (like not a sit down dinner?)
that you would want more things like "party food"
you could have an assortment of wings, all different flavors, snack type things, like maybe a hot dip to go with chips of some sort...other hot hordourves...

I think one of the best ways to plan a party is to have a variety of "finger food" for a spread.
With a variety of foods, people can choose the foods that they prefer. Everybody happy! You will be the host with the mostess!!

Steamed shrimp and/or steamed clams served with a deli bread cut in chunks and with spreads (spinach and cream cheese, olive and cream cheese, crab and cream cheese) a cheese ball or two with bagal chips, and or party breads. You should also have raw vegetables with an onion dip, fruit (strawberries, chuncks of pineapple, etc) with a sweet fruit dip. And of course theres a simple fondue (velveta cheese with salsa) served with bread, chocolate fondue with angle food cake or pound cake chunkes and or strawberries.
have a ball..
