No, that is not normal at all. Sometimes people's blood sugar spikes, even if they aren't diabetic, to about 180 after a big meal. 246 is too high. You should go see your physician and have a glucose tolerance test performed.

Your blood sugar probably shouldn't go up that high after eating but potatoes are like pure sugar so I'm not surprised that was the reading you got. Try testing after 1 hour and then again after another hour. Also do fasting readings. This is the best way to see if your body regulates insulin and blood glucose properly.
Try this website:http://www.endocrineweb.com/diabetes/diagnosis.html
there are instructions here for how to do fasting blood glucose tests and what the readings should be. There are also other tests here that will be really helpful to you.

246 is not a normal person's bg. If you score that high after eating, you need to get checked for diabetes. People without diabetes blood glucose should rarely get above 160 after a meal.
Remember that anything you eat will raise your blood sugar, not just sweets. Carbs will make it rise faster and higher than fats or proteins.
As suggested, check your meter for accuracy with the control solution.

I myself am a diabetic. You should never test your sugar 30 minutes after you eat. You had potatoes. They are starch, which converts quickly to sugar. Were the pork chops glazed?
Normal blood sugar, in a healthy person, would be around 180 two hours after you eat. What you experienced is normal. If you're not a diabetic, what prompted you to test your blood glucose levels?

You know you are to wait about 2 hours to take your blood sugar, it is normal for the stomach has not finish digesting your food intake. Try taking it later and see what your reading is... more normal, I am sure, not to worry because you know you didn't wait the proper time, before taking blood sugar. Sounds like you had a nice dinner, what happen to the veggie, stop the rushing after eating so you can get a correct reading, take care all is good.

Hi,
Well to be honest that is high even if you have eaten. To be sure make sure you take the test after 2 hours after you have eaten.
I did and mine ws 8.7 mmol (UK), which is 156 mg/dl roughly and that is a little high, I am not diabetic but work in the medical side of things.
Try it again and see what you get after 2 hours then if its high again do a fasting one after not eating or drinking except for water for I think its a 12 or 10 hour period. (go to sleep then wake up and do it first thing). But remember you should always seek medical advice before you start this just in case.
Regards
Smith

Normal blood sugar is generally considered to be between 80-120. Sometimes what you drink with a meal is as bad to raise it as what you eat. Also, when testing blood sugar you have to make sure the meter is callibrated and that the strips are not out of date...One unusual reading does not indicate definite problems but it is worth checking into so that if you are developing a problem you can correct it with diet and exercise.
good luck

No it isn't normal. Make sure none of the strips were expired or anything because that can really screw things up. Call the company that made the machine. They might be able to help you. If your blood sugar is that high without being diagnose a diabetic. you have problems. It doens't matter when you've eaten. That is what your pancreas is for!

I'm not diabetic either, but I do know a little about it because it does run in my family.
Any starchy food that you eat will be turned into glucose (sugar). Therefore eating potatoes, bread, and corn (just to name a few) you will have elevated sugar levels.

Don't be concerned. Always check your blood glucose first thing in the morning before eating and at least 10-12 hours after your last meal. It is more accurate at determining whether you are diabetic.
