Herpes spreads through intimate skin contact with an infected individual. Although the virus can be spread through contact with lesions or secretions, most transmission occurs from unrecognized lesions or asymptomatic shedding of the virus.

Genital herpes is transmitted through sexual contact (vaginal, anal, and oral). The virus can be transmitted from oral to genital regions and vice versa during oral sex.

You can pass cold sores onto the genitals because they are contagious and they can be caused by the herpes virus. But it would be cold sores (HSV1) genitally not genital herpes. Any type of herpes that occurs on the genitals gets called genital herpes. Cold sores don't turn into genital herpes (HSV2), this is a slightly different strain of the same herpes virus that causes cold sores. I contracted oral herpes on my genitals after my boy friend decided to give me oral sex with a cold sore so it's possible to pass cold sores to the genitals. The only way it can affect your unborn baby is if you give the baby a kiss while you have an out break on your lip. The genital type of herpes can be passed to the baby if the mother has an out break on her genitals when she delivers. The only way you could pass them to your genitals is if you rub a cold sore then immediately after rub your genitals but this is unlikely to happen because herpes (of any type) does not like to live away from the body or on objects for more then seconds.

Yes, there isn't any. Herpes is caused by a virus. Actually, there is little cure for viruses nowadays. The only thing that you can generally do in the case of a viral infection is strengthen the immune system and hope it fights it off. Not with Herpes, the immune system can't win against it. Thus you only get to treat the symptoms. Once you're infected, it stays with you for life. So don't get infected.

Personal experience. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years.

No. If the person doing the giving is the one with the genetal lesions, then you will not transmit. The herpes virus hangs out near the site where the lesions always occur (It resides long-term in neuron clusters called ganglions). It won't travel throughout the body. So if you have genital herpes (herpes virus 2), but you contact another person's genitals with your mouth only, then you will not transmit the virus. However, if you are getting the oral sex, that person can get the herpes on their mouth. Simliarly, oral herpes (cold sores, herpes virus 1) can be transmitted to the genitals during oral sex.

No, definitely not. Genital herpes is only infectious through contact with the infected genitals and not the mouth. Like oral herpes (cold sores) it is a localised infection.
