Call your pharmacist. Ask what the normal dose is for a baby of the weight of your baby. The pharmacist will know. Make sure that the order does not say 0.2 mls instead of 2 mls. Look for those all important decimal points.

Albuterol is a pretty safe medication. When one is given too much, it results in fast heart rate and nervousness. It sounds like this is what your baby was experiencing.

It is interesting that other people who are giving advice tell you not to follow the advice of the people giving advice. I have close to 18 years of experience in being a Respiratory Therapist. Anyone with a brain in their head would not give you an amount to give your child but advise you to call the doctor or therapist.

Albuterol Dosage For Infants

2016-11-16 11:21:17 · answer #3 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

2.5mg is a normal dose for an adult. usually we give infants half the normal dose. 1.25mg.....if the baby is over one yr. 2.5mg isn't going to do harm. just make the child a little hyper. if the baby is under one....it could cause his heart to go too fast. but in 8yrs of giving the medication to pediatric patients, i've never seen any really bad adverse reactions from albuterol.

there are doctors who prescribe the adult dose for infants, those infants are usually pretty sick. but the babies do ok on it after they get used to the side effects.

ask your doc about xopenex. it has less side effects. it is considered safer than albuterol. less increased heart rates and less hyperactivity. and there is a child dose. .31mg

CALL YOUR DOCTOR
Albuterol is so strong I can't believe you would even think of giving it to a baby without a doctor instructing you to so so!

Please don't heed any other advice you get here.

2-6 years: 0.1-0.2 mg/kg/dose 3 times/day; maximum dose not to exceed 12 mg/day (divided doses)
