I have type 1, and people ask me if mine is "BAD" enough that I have to inject insulin/use an insulin pump...but that is not "BAD" diabetes, just a different type in which you HAVE to take insulin (inhaled can also be done now). It is not that I have "let myself go" or have "had it so long". It is a different friggin' thing with similarities, the most obvious being the high blood sugar and potential problems. Why does the media pretend that type 2 is the only one?? I mean, I understand it is most prevalent, but you should have the type 2 also indicated where "diabetes" is printed, if that is the case.

I think it is rude for someone to say "Get over yourself and your disease process". Wow, imagine if someone said that to someone with a chronic disease.....oh, wait a second.....

Yes I agree. The media should have to used the qualifier "type 2" when they are specifically talking about type 2 diabetes. However, I think it wouldn't make much difference with most people. Most people don't even know there is more than one type. People always ask me those same silly questions too or offer me the latest "diet" or "cure" and I know sometimes it can get annoying. I just use it as an opportunity to educate people on the difference.

Most people grew up hearing not about Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, but rather Juvenile Diabetes (now better known as Type 1) and 'granny's' Diabetes, sometimes called age-onset diabetes or Type 2. And with Type 2 Diabetes, there is the level of Diabetes where you simply take an oral or inhaled medication (my mom used to be on Diabenease (not sure of the spelling), but now has progressed to require insulin. The term Juvenile Diabetes (IMHO), was shelved in favor of listing it as Type 1 when younger and younger patients were coming down with Type 2 due to weight, diet and exercise issues.

As you can tell, there are different levels to both types of Diabetes. This would be a perfect time for you to (calmly) explain the differences. The media just parrots what is the loudest hype.

I think it's because type 2 is becoming more and more of an epidemic, due to the growing obesity problem in the U.S. (elsewhere, too), especially childhood obesity. The focus of the reports that I've been seeing on the news is usually the growing number of people with type 2 diabetes and of people at risk for developing it, rather than on the disease itself.

I believe that the media is paying so much attention to Type 2 diabetes because it can almost always be prevented with proper diet and exercise. Our society is in a Type 2 diabetes crisis because we are over-weight and under-active. Not only that but more and more children are developing Type 2 diabetes, which was really unheard of when I was growing up. (1960-1970)

I know how you feel. Ive been type one for 8 years and it annoys the heck out of me when people ask "did you eat too many sweets as a child". I reckon the media only rant on about type 2 is because it can be treated with exercise/tablets etc and is on the increase now because of "lifestyle" where as type one is well unpreventable.....

I can understand how you feel, and why, but seriously the world isn't here to conform to what you need and want. time to get over yourself and your disease process. you are one of those of a minority that's all. the media deals with the vast majority. not fair, I know, but then nobody promised us fair.
