the "water pill" called a diuretic, will decrease total fluid volume in your blood, which in turn decreases the work load on the heart which in turn decreases blood pressure. It is usually the first line of treatment with newly diagnosed hypertension. You need to cut your salt intake, you need to be drinking 2 liters of water a day, and you need to exercise for a minimum of thirty minutes a day. This, more than anything else will delay that day when you have to take stronger and stronger meds to control your blood pressure.

I have had high blood pressure since I was 32yrs and am now 47yr old. They do not know why and just call it ideopathic --meaning "no known cause" - hypertension. I usually run 148/86 and take 2 different medications daily, but when I get stressed, it has gone as high as 170/110. I have gone through the battery of tests. There are so many factors that effect your BP. Smoking, alcohol use, drug use, kidney problems, heart problems, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, lung problems. It's kind of like a process of elemination sometimes to get the answer. I don't mean to preach, but if you don't control high BP, you run the risk of systemic shut down of your body over time. There are so many different medications out and new ones everyday, that surely your boyfriend can find one ot two that will work and he can function with. I can't stress how important is. Otherwise you run the risk of strokes, cardiomegaly--which is enlargement of the heart and has no cure ---kidney failure, aortic aneurysm, aneurysms of the brain, blindness and a whole slew of other organ failures. Please urge him to ask his doctor about any new meds that have come out. I take Maxide, which is a potassium sparing diuretic, and atenolol, which is actually a heart med used for slowing the heart rate and lowering the BP. The two meds are usually prescribed together. I have not had any side effects but PLEASE remember that no two people are exactly alike and should never be treated exactly the same until thoroughly examined by a doctor. I don't mean to sound sexist, but men are more reluctant to seek medical care than women are. My husband is the same. He won't go to the doctor unless he's half dead. I don't know if they think of it as a weakness or are afraid of what they are going to hear from the doctor. Men think of themselves as the ones who take care of others and hate the idea of being the ones who need help. I've been an RN for 23yrs and it hasn't changed. Please just keep being supportive of him. You sound like an awesome woman and I hope he knows how lucky he is to have you. Best of Luck to You Both!!

You sound a lot like me. I was found to have high blood pressure at age of 32. I am now 33. I had to go to the ER because I had a really bad headache. My BP was 225/120. I was started on HCTZ, a water pill. It is used usually with other treatments, to help eliminate extra water in your blood stream, which in turn takes sodium with it. I also have family history, I also take other BP meds now, I seem to be doing well. I would not recommend getting medications from anywhere other than prescribed by a doctor. Herbal supplements are not regulated by the FDA, and can actually do more harm than good. Continue to get plenty of exercise, ( I walk with my dog, sometimes a few times a day) Drink lots of water, (sounds counter productive when taking a water pill, but it helps flush the bad stuff out) eat a well balanced low salt diet, and stay away from caffeine. (Energy drinks such as Red Bull are a big NO!)

You should read "The Blood Pressure Solution" (also available in electronic format, watch the video presentation here: http://www.fixbloodpressure.com ) It's a very comprehensive step-by-step book that walks you through the natural remedies of high blood pressure. It provides you with a lot of information on what foods to eat, how you can acquire and prepare these foods, how you can change your lifestyle for the better, how to eliminate the toxins from your body, how to reduce stress, how you can check your blood pressure level the correct way etc.
The book is amazing in that it not only lowers your blood pressure without the help of medications; it also aids you in having a life that is healthy, happier, and less stressful. This book chanced my life.

'Water pill' called diuretics make you pass more urine. That lowers the salt content and water content in the body and also by some unknown effect, lower the blood pressure. Of the many types of blood pressure medication diuretics are the ones most used after beta-blockers. You may have to go to the toilet more than usual, so the tablets are better taken in the morning so you need not keep awake at nights.
