The Catholic Church is to blame for the fish isn't meat balderdash (I would have used an alternate less-polite word if I didn't think the filter would get me). Fish is meat. Vegetarians do not eat meat. They do not eat animal flesh of any kind.

And this is a question that has been asked a million times as well.

No. That would be a very lax definition of vegetarianism. It might be that people eat fish for health reasons and are otherwise veggie, but if they eat parts of the body of an animal, then they are not vegetarian.

Some people consider, though, that they are not causing suffering by eating fish because fish have less complex brains.

Yes vegetarians can eat fish. Some vegetarians do eat meat. There are so many levels of them.

First!
There are vegetarians who eat animals but only eat the fish, turkey, and chicken (known as pouletry).

Then!
You have vegetarians who eat animals, but only the animals without any nerves. That means that the animal doesn't feel any pain when you kill them.

Next
You have vegetarians like meat who don't eat any meat at all.

Lastly
You have the strictest of vegetarians- vegans!!!
They don't eat any animals or anything that comes from an animal. Milk isn't a meat, but because we get them from cows (an animal) they don't eat it. Anything that has eggs in it, they won't eat.

But to answer your question, yes vegetarians do eat fish- but not all of us.

It's not a question of can or cannot. If you follow a vegetarian diet because you don't want to eat animals' flesh, fish would not be included in the diet because fish are animals.
If one chooses to eat fish and vegetables, then it's not a vegetarian diet because fish are not vegetables. Whether one chooses to eat fish or not, it's up to them. Your mother is wrong in saying vegetarians eat fish.

Fish is fish and Meat is meat and I know of some people who claim to be vegetarians and do eat fish. I do feel that to be a true vegetarian and call yourself a vegetarian you wouldn't eat fish. I guest the answer is quite simple we should have a new name for those that eat fish--How about "Fishatarian"--sounds good to me.

No they don't eat fish, vegetarians don't eat anything that came from an animal, so this would include fish.

Real vegetarians don't eat any kind of animal including fish.

Some people say they are vegetarian and eat certain animals. I don't understand why they would do that.

My wife is Indian, Bengalis often eat fish, but no Indian vegetarian would refer to them as "vegetarians." Other Indians eat beef, pork or whatever, but no Indian vegetarian would called them "vegetarians" either. Go to any Indian restaurant and ask for the "veg" items, it will include dairy but no fish, and no eggs.

If people who eat no other animals besides "fish" want to call themselves "pescetarian" fine with me. But "vegetarian" would not be correct. It is actually offensive to vegetarians when pescetarians say "I'm vegetarian but I eat fish" because it is contradictory.
