It really doesn't matter. It's a religious story that is supposed to teach us about free will and the responsibility that goes along with it (or at least that's my understanding of it).
In my opinion, it's silly to debate whether the apple was really a mushroom, a raisin, or whatever.

The Bible says fruit and that it was on a tree, so that rules out mushroom, although it does NOT specify apple. Illustrators have often pictured it that way, but I'm sure it was something much more exotic and different and "one-of-a-kind" looking.
There is likely no such fruit or anything similar today, since the Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil was closed to mankind along with the rest of the Garden of Eden when Adam & Eve were kicked out of it.

The story said "forbidden fruit" not specifically an apple. Certainly not the red delicious variety of apple as popularly shown. Also, a mushroom is not a fruit.

I heard some say it was a banana
Someone else said it was a pear
Probably some fruit we are cut off from! Adam and Eve were bad from Garden Of Eden! What I was taught: Man took of the forbidden fruit and gave it on to Woman and blamed the woman eve! Man was fooled by a serpent who appeared in a image like that of a child!
This serpent beguiled(confused) the man!

I heard somewhere that some religious historians think it wasn't an apple, but a pomegranate.

Well..since we weren't actually there and we are going on by what other people said happened..yes.
The bible was wrote by people chosen by god..so it is quite possible they wrote their version of the story...instead of exactly what god said to write down.
It is also possible that throughout the years things may have gotten a little mixed up and reworded since in the begining books were copied by hand...not copied by something more effecient and that makes virtually any flaws..like a printer.
