I was in the hospital for 5 days for pneumonia. I was released 10 days ago and still get so tired. I get a good nights sleep and I am trying not to over do it. Like so many others, I work and I have a family to take care of, (kids ages 7,9, and 10).

The old saying is a mother can not afford to get sick. I just would like to hear from others who have had pneumonia and see what their recuperating time was.

I am scheduled to go back to the doctors this Friday for a two week follow up and new x-rays.

Thanks for the help

Recuperating From Pneumonia

It depends on what type of infection is causing the pneumonia (viral, bacteria, or fungal), a person's overall health, and whether or not a person smokes. In an otherwise healthy person, it usually takes at least 4 weeks to fight off a bacterial infection that is not resistant to antibiotics, and at least 6 weeks for viral and fungal infections. Fungal infections can sometimes take as long as 2-3 months to disappear.

Even after the pneumonia is gone, a person can get easily winded for several months. Its very easy to over-do it before everything is healed. Its common to wake up some mornings feeling like you never had pneumonia and then take on too much activity. Then the next day, the symptoms can come back as bad as ever and it takes a few days or a week to clear up again.

I've had pneumonia half a dozen times. Each time was different. Usually it depends on how quickly it was diagnosed, the type it was, and what kind of shape you were in when it started. If you've been taking it easy, you should get over the pneumonia fairly quickly, but getting back to going about your everyday life will take longer. Your body used its resources to fight the illness. You'll have to gradually increase your activity and work your way back to full speed and stamina. Good luck.

I have had bacterial pneumonia several times this year with the last one getting septic also. It has only been a couple of months now and I still get exhausted then some surges of energy then I am wiped out for 24 hours. I don not know how long but I am guessing several months or more and I am only58 years old.
