You have Type 2 Diabetes. First of all stay away from sugar. Don't even think it can be included in your Diet. Eat the same amount at every meal according to your Diet. Eat foods that are easy to digest. Take the word from your Dietitian and don't experiment. Exercise is the Key factor on cutting down on tablets. If you are unable to exercise find a way. Consult a Physical Therapist and rely on what he or she has been trained to relay

Why are you afraid of the meds for diabetes? They make life so much more simple and easy.

Metformin, the #1 med for combatting glucose overload, works mainly on the liver preventing it from dumping a bunch of stored glucose on the already compromised system. It also helps the muscles accept the natural insulin in the system along with the glucose you have eaten. It does not cause weight loss or gain.
Some of the other meds can cause hypo episodes so must be closely watched and do have a nasty habit of causing edema as well.

How to reduce the sugars in your food plan? Cut out all white foods, most tan, yellow and orange foods. Eat mostly meats and salads!! Cereals are white until toasted when they become tan.

If you do have a problem then the nature and magnitude of the problem need to be identified and taken care of as diabetes can and does affect virtually every organ in the body important ones are eyes, kidneys etc
If your diabetes is manageable with diet and exercise alone your doctor will advise you so if it is not controlled with such measures you must take medications under the supervision of your doctor. A good care by you and your doctor will certainly improve the quality of your life and health and avoid complications such as blindness, kidney failure etc.

Read labels and learn to calculate the carbs.
A large number of foods, especially soft drinks, have HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) as a sweetener. HFCS is so close in structure to glucose that it is passed into the bloodstream very quickly.

Avoid it as much as possible.

Keep your carbohydrate (carb) intake as low as possible; carbs are changed to glucose in the body.

Exercise, vigorously, at least 20 minutes / day

Be aware that while tablets and insulin may reduce the blood glucose level, both do so by increasing the cellular uptake of glucose. Excess glucose is stored as fat, ergo, both tablets and insulin will make you gain weight which will decrease the body's natural insulin effectiveness as well as that of the tablets and injected insulin, forcing you to increase your dose, which will increase the uptake of glucose..etc. A vicious cycle.

Get a copy of the book "The New Glucose Revolution", by Drs. Jennie Brand-Miller, Thomas Wolever, Stephen Colagirui and Daye Foster-Paul. It explains the glycemic index and tells you how to make changes to your diet to successfully control your blood sugar. You'll also lose fat - especially stomach fat. It's amazing.

Avoid the white stuff, like white bread, white rice. Stop taking artificial sugars and stick to fruits. Stop drinking soda. Stop eating fast food. If the food does not look like how it should in nature, don't eat it. Exercise. Exercise uses up the sugar in the body.
