I went to a punk rock 80's party once where everybody dressed up punk / new wave style (like out of valley girl movie). I don't recommend this, but the party we went to handed out cans of spray paint and we painted their walls with graffiti. (they were re-painting and thought it would be a fun touch).

tell everyone it is an 80's theme party, best dressed gets a prize, movie passes or something, play all eighties music, serve
Popular drinks for an 80's theme are Corona beer and wine coolers. Be sure to have soda on hand for the non-alcoholic set as well as water for all.

For music go with the Culture Club, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, Michael Jackson Thriller album and the early Madonna stuff and have people come dressed in 1980's clothes...basically really big hair, shoulder pads, etc. Watch a clip of Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan and you will get an idea of what girls dressed like in the 1980's...watch some "Flashdance" as well and you will get the idea.

Sushi started moving into interior of the country from the west coast and new york.

Maybe serve them a vegamite sandwich, so they'll know what colin hay was singing about.

I have 80s parties every year for me and my girlfriends to hang and have fun!
everyone MUST dress up, and I have a special prize for best dressed- usually a good 80s movie and all the guests vote for the best dressed- if a tie have a triva question or 80s dance off to decide who wins!
I also make up 80s trivia questions and we play that before voting on best dressed (no prizes for this, just fun, but you can do prizes of you want) they also have a lot of 80s trivia games out right now that you can play instead of making up questions (I even saw a DVD one at the dollar store!) then to vote for best dressed I just have everyone tear off a piece of paper from their trivia and put them in a hat then I tally up the scores
play all 80s music- I gat a bunch of CDs online from Ebay- best of 80s, theres 8 CDs that I play throughout the house all night
we also play a prize game at my parties where everyone brings one wrapped gift no more than $5 and put them in a pile ( I also supply extra prizes, one for each of my guests, and add them to the pile) everyone gathers in a circle and takes turns rolling one dice- first person to get #1 can pick a prize- next to get #2 can either take a new prize or steal someone elses- and so on and so on until all the prizes are gone and everyone has a prize. if you're just doing one prize per person and you allready have a prize and want to steal then you just exchange your current prize for theirs. I set a time limit at the end once all the prizes are gone to keep the fun rolling for a bit. it can get pretty crazy when everyone wants that one really cool prize!! this year it was a pair of pajamas that everyone wanted and it got right down to the wire on who ended up winning it!!!
you can also put movie names in a hat and have your guests pick a topic then they have to act it out and everyone guesses on what movie they're trying to do
email me your direct email address of you want me to forward you the copies of the trivia I've used
