My husband and I are going to a vegetarian restaurant later today, and we previewed the menu online. My husband said that many of the dishes sounded like they might be good, except for the fact that they include "wheat-meat."

I've had plenty of soy-based meat substitutes, but never wheat-based ones, so I don't know what to tell him. Can you help me out by describing the taste and texture? Any reviews from non-vegetarians would be especially helpful.

Frankly, he's not going to spend money to try it if he has no clue what it tastes like. There's grilled cheese on the menu, and if he can't get some idea of what anything else is like he'll just play it safe and order that.

It's hard to describe the taste, as it depends on what it's seasoned with. And the texture can depend on the restaurant. If the places you go to make their own seitan, one place may make it differently from another.

The wheat meat I make (yeah, I make my own seitan) is fairly chewy and a bit juicy. Unless the restaurant does it really well, he probably won't mistake it for meat, but if they flavor it well, he may like it. I've been vegan since 2002, and I can tell the difference, but I've learned to like it.

Roast purple meat. It makes the main suitable sandwich. on your face, VEGANS! purple meat tastes extra powerful than tofu. in fact, i might quite date a guy who loves meat quite than one that would not consume it. To me, a real guy eats meat, no longer soy burgers.

Like chewy, meaty dough. Good when seasoned & flavored.

Just let him try it and make his own mind up.
