I am a type one diabetic and am trying to lose weight. I am on the pump. Ive been told a diet low in carbs is the way to go. I dont eat bread, sweets or anything. At the most, my carbs are from maybe a bowl of popcorn or fruits. My question is, will i still lose weight if i eat an apple or do i have to give up carbs completely? I also exercise everyday, so there shouldnt be any reason why i shouldnt lose weight right?

giving up carbohydrates entirely is dangerous for a non diabetic so I wouldnt recomend doing that. further most diets recomend not eating white and refined flour. Thats like tortillas, white rice, white pasta, white bread, mc donalds fries and burgers, soda, candy... etc. Giving up these sorts of things is a good thing for anyone diabetes or not. and doing so is harder than it seems. get rid of all these things and it will make a huge nutritional difference. plus complex carbs take longer to break down so it keeps blood suger levels more balanced. I would still keep some candy or something around tho for the potential diabetic emergency. ex. have oatmeal in the morning or grape nuts or something, a quick brunch small meal salad or something, a tuna sandwich for lunch with whole wheat fibrous bread, a protien bar snack, then some whole wheat pasta with spinach salad for dinner... just an example of a good days eat with lots of good carbs.

For the most part Diabetic diets are very similar to Atkins diets. If you research Atkins you will see a close similarity. Many people disagree until they actually see how Atkins works. It is a very healthy way to eat. Meats, lots of vegetables and some fruits. Atkins recipes are meant to minimally impact blood sugar levels

Carbs are basically sugars, fibers (Fibers are good), and many other ingredients you don't know about. You want to stick with natural carbs like fruit but not too much. Splenda is a great substitute sugar. YES you will lose weight.
If you are diabetic follow second and third stage Atkins. Don't follow the stage for Ketosis.

I would recommend talking with your doctor. But he will probably say something very similar. Don't give up Carbs completely though (That is the Ketosis stage). Continued for long periods can be dangerous.

If you are interested in losing weight in a healthy manner, talk to your local dietitian. Cutting out carbs is not a good thing for anyone, diabetic or non. However I agree with the nurse, reducing your calorie intake and portion sizes will help you to lose weight in a gradual manner. your local dietitian can set up a meal plan to help you with these dietary changes. Please speak with them first before you start cutting out foods.

you don't cut anything in the way of nutrition, that includes complex carbs. You simply need to decrease portion size and minimize total caloric intake. How much you decrease total caloric intake depends on how much you weigh now, how much you need to lose and how fast you wish to lose it.
