I am 47, female, a triathelete (I work out A LOT) and during a strenous swim workout had heaviness and a dull pain in my chest. I had convinced myself it was muscular in nature BUT after 44 laps I quit and drove myself to the hospital. After a work up that included numerous EKG's (several were abnormal), echocardiogram and a heart cath, my arteries are perfectly normal and the only real abnormality was a high white count. Now what? I still have this pain, BUT it hasn't changed character and so the doctors aren't hugely worried. Should I get a second opinion?

It sounds to me you had a pretty thorough cardiology work-up that was unrevealing for a heart issue. That's good news. You can feel assured that your cath revealed normal coronary arteries!

Sometimes pain in the chest can be musculoskeletal, sometimes it can be reflux.

Why was your white count up? That could indicate infection somewhere.

What was the abnormality on your EKG? Also, have they ruled out pericarditis? That can cause chest pain that wouldn't show up on a cath.

Hope this helps.

I'm sixteen, and I've had left sided chest pain before too, and I get heart scans regularly since I had a blood/artery/heart type of disease when I was a kid, and they were all fine. But it's probably worth getting a second opinion anyway, since heart problems are so dangerous.
