I am 12 weeks. I have been feeling very thirsty and having a dry mouth for a week. I have an appointment today with my OB/GYN. My questions are:
1- In addition to the dipstick urine test they do at each visit, what other tests can they order? Glucose tolerance test? What else?
2- Is it OK to fast for 8 hours like from 7 am to 3 pm? It is important to my scedulale to do the test today not next week. Is water allowed?

Sorry that I did not mention it, but I will tell the doctor about my symptoms today. But I wanted to be prepared for any test they might want becasue it will be hard to do it next week.

I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes at 28 weeks. I am now 35 weeks. My doctor tested me after finding sugar in my urine at 27 weeks, though I suspect he would have tested me anyway. I had to first go for a one hour glucose test. At the one hour test I had to drink 8 ounces of a sugary orange soda like drink and then wait one hour. After the hour my blood was drawn and my sugar levels were checked. My reading was very high...in the 200's so I had to go back for a three hour test.
It is actually very common to fail the one hour, but pass the three hour test. Unfortunately that wasn't the case for me. For the three hour I had to have my fasting blood sugar checked and then drink 16 ounces of the same drink. They then checked my sugar every hour for three hours.
Before the three hour test they recommend that you follow a low sugar diet for three days prior and that you not eat 12 hours before the test. You are allowed to drink water...but not in large doses. But, if you are only having the one hour test, my doctor at least didn't say I couldn't eat or drink anything that day.
Good luck!

Gestational diabetes is characterized by large fetal size for gestational age, and by the mother spilling ketones into her urine. The glucose tolerance test (which is done fasting) is the gold standard for diagnosis. A minimum fast time is usually 12 hrs, not 8, but your doctor can decide if this is appropriate to you. An alternative would be to get the test done first thing in the a.m., before you eat or drink anything but water. That way you've fasted from the night before, and don't have to go hungry a whole day. So you would stop eating by 8pm and get the test done by 8 am the next day.

I don't know about gestational diabetes but if it's just blood sugar they're testing for you have to fast for 2-3 hrs. because your blood sugar spikes right after meals so an 8 hr. fast should be fine if they decide to expand the tests, your Dr. should have told you if they were doing anything different at this appointment. Water is allowed but nothing with any color or flavor, so propel etc. is right out.

IF its in uncomplicated terms the a million hour attempt, consume such as you will possibly the different everyday day. do no longer rapid or something - otherwise while you're actually not eating such as you do often the attempt won't pop out as an precise meditated photograph of your blood sugar. IF its the 4 hour attempt, you ought to rapid 12 hours in the past hand and that they choose you to consume maximum of carbs some days in the past. the two way, they have you ever drink this "soda" pop which isn't too undesirable. maximum women people do fantastic, yet some fail the 1st attempt and take the 2d attempt and then bypass the 2d attempt. So in the event that they have you ever are taking the 4 hr attempt - do no longer rigidity. actual happens lots and then they do fantastic on the 4 hr attempt. stable success!

water is always allowed, drink lots.
glucose tolerance test is the most commonly ordered test as it is least expensive and most reasonably accurate test to see if you are metabolizing appropriately. Other tests such as the A1C (glycosylated hemoglobin) are not really appropriate in pregnancy because the total picture is changed due to the pregnancy.
Fasting for 8 hours at any time will not hurt you.

They will probably do a fasting blood glucose test, where they draw your blood on several occasions over 3 hours. I don't know abou the fasting - you should check with the doctor on this. If you don't fast, then the test will be useless.
