what does the rest of the world do, like
europe, asia, africa, austrialia

Just to add to Lindsay's answer:

In Canada you can see a doctor, specialist, have brain surgery, whatever, and not pay. (We all pay relatively higher taxes which cover healthcare)

As far as meds go, they aren't covered. But in Ontario, as I'm sure most other provinces/territories, we have a geared-to-income health benefit plan (ours is Trillium) that covers most medications. Depending on family size and family income, you pay a deduction of x amount per year. It could be as low as $50-100. It is very reasonable. All HIV meds are covered by Trillium -- it may take a bit of time for them to be added to the formulary, but HIV meds almost always are. I think they're afraid of the gays acting up again....we do it so well.

Though many people do not need this as many people have employer-paid private coverage which would cover HIV meds.

In Ontario, HIV positive people are eligible for the Ontario Disability Support Program which can be another source for help paying for meds if a person is unable to work and requires social assistance.

I couldn't imagine having to worry about paying for medicine, especially medicine that costly.

in canada its free to visit a doctor of the hospital but u have to pay for your meds if u don't have a health care plan.
