I'm not looking to be a mountain guide, rather I need a recognized certification for single-pitch situations,so that my company's insurance policy will allow me to take my clients cragging. Anyone know any schools that offer that? I'm in Thunder Bay, ON, Canada, but I would obviously be willing to travel for this.

hmm.. yes, I am certainly capable and have been climbing outdoors without supervision for 9 years or so. Every year I take out a handful of newbies and teach them how to be self-sufficient at the crags. I just need to take a test or course so I can have that in writing.

You might want to check out the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. The offer various certification courses, including a top rope instructor.

This will probably be of no help, but in Ireland it's called the single pitch award. You can do a course with the company that does it, or you can just do the test. They say you need a minimum of 15 outdoor lead climbs, I don't see how they can confirm this. Then you do the tests and they give you the award. You need it over here to be allowed(officially) belay and lead at climbing walls. But most places allow you lead and belay if you pass thier test.

God FORBID if the insurance companies ever get involved in rock climbing! Next, we'll be seeing handrails intalled on cliff faces.

But if you're in America, check out AMGA.
