Well, when I get my daughter's insulin from the pharmacy it says "REFRIGERATE" on it. But her endocrinologist said I didn't have to. He said just to keep it in a place where there it won't get warm, away from heating & AC vents. I quit putting it in my fridge because things freeze in there sometimes, and insulin that has been too cold is just as bad if not worse than insulin that's exposed to heat. Or so I'm told.

Oh, and if you're on two different types of insulin, it's beneficial to keep them in two different places, which is hard to do when it's all in the fridge. They said most of the dangerous errors that occur with insulin is mixing them up and giving one at the time the other is due. So each of my daughter's vials has it's own spot. And it helps to have it that way.

That was for insulin made back in the day from cow or pig pancreases ground up, as the protein which made it up was unstable at room temperatures for long periods of time. (it would degrade)

Nowadays, with the recombinant insulin made from yeast or e.coli bacteria (churning it out like little insulin factories) the solution is stable at room temp but they still reccommend keeping it in the fridge, but not the freezer, because one open vial can be used for several weeks. There are shelf-stable formulations of insulin out there.
