An irregular heartbeat by itself is not enough of an indication to start medication.
Usually the doctors will want you to start medications if:
you are getting symptoms - lightheadedness and fainting, chest pains, shortness of breath, etc
your irregular heartbeat is of a dangerous nature
If this last one is demonstrated straight away - you will be placed on medication straight away. However if it is not as dangerous the doctors might want to defer starting you on medication until they have done further investigations.
