Eat a good, balanced meal and drink plenty of NON-caffeine drinks (caffeine is a diruretic and will make you lose fluid).
Keep a glucose meter with you and check your sugar before and after the donation (I mean AT the donor center, preferably when you're in the donation chair). ALWAYS get some juice and cookies when the donation is finished.
If you feel in any way that you are going low, tell the staff and they can stop the donation and monitor you.
Giving blood reduces your fluid volume and can cause a drop in blood sugar...sometimes a rather significant drop. Next time, be better prepared and you should do fine. However, if such a reaction happens again, you may not be suitable for giving blood in the future.
EMT
Type 1, insulin pump, gave 1 7/8 gallons (one pint short of 2 gallons) before retiring from giving blood due to reasons unrelated to diabetes.

Eat before you give blood -- preferably something high in sugar..it really will help raise your blood sugar and therefore enable you to survive the blood draw with lower possibility of keeling over & dying.

Be sure to eat prior to donating. Before a surgery, I gave blood autologously(sp?) at any rate, I was told eating foods high in sugar was best for the very reason you stated. I thought a breakfast high in protein would be the thing but nope! If you are planning to donate, it is wise to eat healthy, at the very least, the day before.

Eat a meal a couple hours before you give blood next time, and drink some orange juice just before you do give blood. Also, just after giving blood drink orange juice. It is a balance of the natural sweetness our bodies need.

Funny you should ask that question, I worked at a blood bank so I can tell you exactly what to do. Have some of those sugary snacks they have while your donating and after to get your sugar back to where it needs to be. Also, try not to be tense, relax.

Eat a meal a few hours before you go in, that way its getting digested before you get there. also let them know that last time you had a bad low blood sugar, and they can give you more OJ while you are giving...that way you are getting sugar while you are losing it.

Seriously, you should be eating something high in sugar immediately before and after you give blood...it WILL help.

the simplest easiest fix is to eat a good meal before giving blood, and eat something like nabs and a coke afterward. i encourage everyone that can to give blood, as it saves so many lives. just be sure to eat before and after giving blood, and eat a very good meal for supper. hope this helps, and God bless you for saving someones life.

They told me to eat a big breakfast before I came in, so I did, that just made me puke up my breakfast all over the place!
I will never give blood again due to this happening. I weighed 113 and they said it was ok. I puked and passed out. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!
