Hello, I'm a firefighter/paramedic and I can tell you the normal range we look for on the street is 60 to 120, with 90 to 140 being allowable. A reading of 317 is too high. Don't rely on a sample test. An accurate reading needs to be done under a controlled condition. If you doctor saw a reading of 317 he should order further test. Too high a reading means the body is shifting to an acidic side...You P h level may be affected. I've seen readings as high as 700. That's as high as our equipment will measure.....I've never seen a reading over 500 and the patient is still conscious.
Don't be to alarmed with a sudden one time reading that high. if you just ate a bag of M&M's and in 10 minutes took a reading it would be higher then the normal range.....what's important is how fast the body gets itself back to a normal range.
If you took a glucose tollerance test they'd load you up with sugar and see how fast the body returns to normal. That's a controlled setting.
If you're still concerned about it see your doctor and tell him what the reading was....he'll take it from there.
Get it checked just to be sure.

RE:
Blood sugar of 317, Is that too high?
I tested at 109 but my boyfriend tested at 317. We received a free blood glucose monitor in the mail as a free sample. Neither of us has been diagnosed with diabetes. What do these numbers mean and how to lower them, ,if needed.

ok so the concesus is right, 317 is way too high. He needs to go to the ER, because thats where his doctor will send him anyway. Even if you ate he should not be higher than 150-ish if he were not diabetic. Your number is great. the meter you got is more than likely a perfectly good meter, ignore hte you get what you pay for comment. Go to the ER tell them what he has been tested at, ALL the times he has tested, and go from there. He most likely had type 1 diabetes, and even though his numbers were coming down, that just means his pancreas is in the starting phases of stopping insulin production. Meaning though he is not making enough, he is still making insulin. Do not have him exercise with high blood sugars because if they are that high he will most likely have ketones, which is sugar in the urine. when you have these and exercise they get worse and make you sicker. Please go to the ER and get checked for Diabetes.

109 is fine. The 317 kind of depends. If it was right after you ate the popcorn and cokes, it may be all right. But if two hours after you ate it it was still over 150, that indicates diabetes. He should test it in the morning when he first gets up. It should be under 105 to be normal. If it's not, he needs to get checked. Probably wouldn't hurt any way. The doctor has a simple test he can do called A1C which will give him the average of his blood sugar over a three month period, and if that average is 7 or higher, then he is probably diabetic. If you are young and in relatively good shape, it probably would be enough for him to cut out all candy and sugared sodas and that will manage it for a while. Also exercise helps. But best get it checked to be sure.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.
Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

Any time your Blood sugar starts to climb higher then 96, it's time to take concern. 317, not having any control over that high of a blood sugar will complicate your life real quick. Get to a Doctor because if you feel alright and running 317 your really in bad shape.

317 is DEFINITELY high, but no need to panic. First thing to do is establish whether anything of high sugar content was consumed less than 60 minutes prior to the testing.
Regardless of what the answer is, I would still seek out a medical opinion. As diabetes is on the rise, Doctor's are becoming even more willing to send their patients for a simply blood test to establish whether they are diabetic or not.
Even if you turn out to be diabetic, provided you maintain your diet/exercise/insulin shots (whatever your doctor sets out for you as YOUR personal plan), and follow instructions on what to do in the event of an 'emergency' you should be just fine. Many of my friends and family all have diabetes and none of them have encountered problems (time they've had it ranges from <1 to >22 years)
Good luck!

70 to 150 in normal... he should see a Doc. if it is consistently high.
High Blood Sugar causes heart disease, kidney failure and blindness. Extreme cases of high blood sugar may go into a diabetic coma, falling into unconsciousness.
Contact the doc. any time your blood sugar runs consistently higher than 250 for more than two days. When a person with Type 2 diabetes encounters a high blood sugar, the strategy used in bringing it down will vary from individual to individual.
Mostly to bring it back under control includes, reducing your stress, become more physically active, adjust your eating habits, cut sodium intake... Medications can also help.
