Yes, unless you have both have had type-specific blood tests for herpes 1 and 2. Normal std screens do NOT test for herpes, and 90% of people who test positive on a blood test do not realise that they have it because they do not have recogniseable symptoms.

It is also possible, if one of you has oral herpes (cold sores) and they give you oral sex, for you to contract genital herpes. This is how I caught genital herpes. 8 out of 10 people have cold sores, most catch them as children and by adulthood do not ever recall having one and do not realise that they are infected. Contrary to popular belief, most herpes infections are passed on either by partners who have never had any symptoms or partners who aren't experiencing any symtpoms at the time of transmission.

It doesn't mean anyone has cheated. Because herpes is only infectious for a small fraction of the time, it can suddenly crop up in one partner years into completely monogamous relationship. My boyfriend gave me herpes seven years into our relaitonship.

WHAT are you people talking about? You just assume from one simple question that a partner is cheating on another? I hope those people didn't break up over all the ignorance here. First of all, you'd have to know how long they've been together. A person with herpes can have it and never know it. It's called being A-symptomatic. They could have been infected long before the current relationship, and had no clue they are infected, pass it on to their partner, and the partner can show symptoms immediately, OR also be A-symtomatic for years, and years....potentially never showing symptoms. In this case, either or both partners would only know their HSV status by being officially and properly tested by a DOCTOR.

Also, herpes "down there" is basically the same thing as oral herpes. They are one dna strand off from being identical. HERPES IS HERPES.....no matter what type you have. It's all just a virus. There can be complications, sure. But only in those people with compromised immune systems. Cold sores are herpes and you have to have skin to skin contact to be infected orally just as much as you do genitally.

You can NOT catch this virus from immaterial objects. It needs a live body to survive in, and it takes direct skin to skin contact to transmit the virus from one person to another. Usually and almost always it takes direct contact with sensitive, mucosal skin such as the lips, vagina, anal tissue, etc...Or a break in otherwise normal skin (such as a wound, pimple, dry cracked skin).
