Usually from overhead.

Tastes great but some, like the shellfish, are very high in cholesterol.

Gypsy---what seafood do you eat?

A semi-vegetarian diet containing seafood and vegetables (pescetarian) is certainly healthier than the diets of many omnivores. It provides a convenient source of Omega-3 fatty acids, and some seafood is claimed to raise HDL levels. For those who are unwilling or unable to fully adapt their lifestyles to a vegetarian or vegan diet, it's a good, healthy choice. Some health websites (such as healthhacker) suggest that a pescetarian diet is healthier than vegetarian and vegan diets because Omega-3 fatty acids are so essential and it is easy for vegetarians and vegans to fail to consume sufficient quantities.

If you are going to eat seafood often you should be careful about where it's coming from. After pumping toxic chemicals into our oceans for centuries, we're now finding that those chemicals are affecting a lot of our seafood. It's possible to make contaminant-free choices, so best to do your research first.

Pescetarians who call themselves vegetarians often get a lot of ire from vegetarians and vegans. This is because the mislabelling confuses other people and can lead to friends/family/catering companies assuming that all "vegetarians" eat fish. Pollotarians (who eat chicken and vegetables) do this too; and I've found that I need to spell my dietary preferences out just to be safe: "I am vegetarian. I don't eat red meat, chicken or any seafood. Dairy and eggs are ok."

As to whether it's better to be a pescetarian vs vegetarian/vegan, I think it depends on your reasons. If you're turning away from land based meat because of ethical reasons and the pain and suffering the animals experience; and you believe that due to their limited nervous systems the sea creatures we eat can't feel pain; then you're probably fine. If it's because of environmental reasons, then you may want to think about the ecology damage we're doing by overfishing first. If it's health reasons then you've probably got a good case to pick pescetarian unless you're really going to commit to vegetarianism or veganism. If it's taste, well then eat what you like!

We eat salmon often, and where I live we can get it fresh and that's the only way, if it smells it's old- don't buy it, the same goes for any other type...as for shellfish I stopped eating it years age, I don't trust the waters anymore..again where I live in the Pacific Northwest there is plenty here..but to many homes are build on or near the beach and I can smell the sewer near those homes and that is where the shellfish are dug..to many times a notice is posted at the beach not to dig..

The vast majority of worldwide vegetarians come from centuries' old vegetarian cultures that regularly eat seafood and fish as part of their diet.

Only the tiny, tiny minority of "strict" vegetarians don't eat any animal life including seafood. So who really gives a rip what they say.

I eat seafood/fish at least 3x's per week as a flexitarian vegetarian. "Oily" fish like salmon, mackeral, and tuna are particularly healthy and loaded with Omega-3.

Quite good. Shellfish is not as good as regular seafood. I would stay away from sturgeon, which marry Russians and have caviar children.

Well, I personally don't like seafood, but I used to, and I loved (emphasis on loved) stuffed clams! But I stopped liking them when I found out I'm allergic. So what's your view on seafood...

I personally love seafood. I don't care for lobster or salmon and avoid little neck 'steamers' (boiled clams), but all other seafood I devour especially scallops and oysters.

I also enjoy Sushi and have it a few times a year. But because of all the serious oceanic pollution I've curtailed a lot of my seafood intake, much to my chagrin.

I personally love seafood. Probably where the majority of my protein comes from. I don't think there is a much healthier option then salmon, which is what I had for dinner last night.

well, you cant be "Vegetarian but I eat fish", as many people claim. Eating just fish is "Pescatarian".

Fishes and other seafood are animals too, so if you are wanting to save the animals as your reasons for going Veggie, then fish is not an option.
