Ok I have a dental abcess, its severly infected, went to the dentist they gave me a antibotic shot and some antibotic pills, been taking them like I am suppose to but I am not feeling to well. I am a insulin dependent diabtiec and kinda worried that maybe the infection has spread. My jaw is still swollen and I am sick to my stomach, body aches kinda feels like the flu. Should I be worried or is this normal? My sugars have been running a little higher then normal 170-220 range since this happened. Just worried that maybe I should call the denist again. Any thoughts?

You don't say what antibiotic you're taking. Generally for dental abscesses some form of penicillin is still one of the best. For penicillin-allergic patients obviously something else must be used, and some of these such as clindamycin have a high incidence of stomach upset.
If the swelling hasn't come down that's enough reason to go back to the dentist. Sometimes it's necessary to incise the abscess to aid in drainage. Of course if you have some unrelated bug it's just going to make you feel even worse, and an infection tends to decrease your resistance to catching whatever bug is going around. So if your dentist feels the tooth is getting under control, it's still a good idea to chech with your physician.

Good luck,

I have had a number of dental abcesses since starting insulin. I found that one course of antibiotics is not usually enough. I had three courses for the last two abcesses. Even my dentist is getting used to me !

When diabetics get an infection their blood sugars usually rise. Its a response to the body fighting the infection. You would feel ill because you have an infection. You just need to increase your insulin to keep pace with the rising blood sugar.

Your dentist can do nothing until the infection has gone and to get rid of it you need to take antibiotics. Also, my dentist told me that the antibiotics he prescribes are stronger than what the doctor prescribes. Therefore your doctor is going to act no differently so going to see him at this point won't help. You therefore need to give the antibiotics time to work. You may need more than one course so don't miss your follow-up appointments. I hope you feel better soon.

Yes, you should. If your sugar is not well controlled during an infection of any kind, the antibiotics will not work as well, and your infection will not clear up. You MUST control your sugar levels VERY CLOSELY, no matter how bad you feel right now! If you don't, your infection could spread into the rest of your body, and you could become very ill!

You should call on your doctor whom you are consulting for diabetes. Dentist can do nothing about it.
