its painful when the dentist do the adjustment. its when tightening happens. and during that time try to eat soft foods or just plain soup. try to avoid hitting your teeth with the spoon or fork when eating as it hurts.
don't worry it really hurts because your teeth are moving and it will come out great after the braces.=)

I would not say hurt. Maybe sore is a better word. I am a dentist, and I have had braces so I should be doulble qualified. I feel that the most sore you will feel during the entire time an ortho treatment is active with braces, is the day after each time they tighten the wires. The faster they move the teeth the more sore each visit is.
Thanks

They cleaned my teeth and they put on brackets. Then they put the wire on the brackets and asked what color I would like the band to be to keep the wire in place. Then they told me how to care for my braces, what to eat & what not to eat, how to brush, etc. That whole week after I got my braces my teeth were very sore because of how quick the braces were working. After one month my teeth were almost in the place they were supposed to be in. About a month after I had gotten my braces, my mouth no longer hurt, even when they tightened my braces.
But during the procedure it doesn't hurt at all. All they do is glue on brackets. You don't feel anything at all. I was surprised at how easy it was, and I am a big wimp when it comes to dentistry! Lol!

With train tracks the only painful part for me was when they were tightened, that happens every few months, and lasts about 2 days other than the the whole procedure was fine.
