People whose SOLE income comes from the freelance murder of strangers for profit. Or is this merely the invention of Hollywood, and the real hitmen are mobsters, part-timers or lone nutcases?

Serious answers please- thanks!

Here's a short story that might prove helpful.

I used to employ a very sweet, innocent-seeming 16 year old girl in a clothing store. Her parents were going through a divorce, and her mother had already taken up with a new man.

One day, she simply stopped showing up for work. Co-workers said she didn't show up at school. She never came back.

We later found out that she was saving every penny of her wages. She had answered a classified ad for a hitman in "Soldier of Fortune" magazine (this was years ago... the magazine no longer exists.)

She was trying to get mom's new BF killed so her real dad and mom would "have" to get back together...

Turns out the guys in the ads in the back of those magazines are all FBI agents. Poor girl was shipped off to a psych ward.

There are people in south America who are "enforcers" for drug cartels. I've wondered if the hit man from 'No Country for Old Men' was invented a little though. He would have a short life, as seen by his injuries throughout the film.

There are consequences for your actions, and those who kill professionally have to deal with escape, and others firing back. And they have to deal with murder investigations, and witnesses. A lone operative would stand a chance at a short run of murders for hire before eventually being taken out or imprisoned.

I just saw on the news yesterday a guy in prison for shooting at his girlfriend's ex-husband's house was arrested for hiring a hit man he met in jail.

I couldn't find the story on the net, but the police got word of the plan, and went to the intended victim's house, and staged the killing with photos of fake blood. I'm not making this up. I think what happened was, the "hitman" hired a different guy to do the job, who then went to the police. So the guy who was already in jail got another 100 years, and the guy who was the intermediate hitman got 4 years. That's what they said!

I doubt they exist here in the US as an only profession.

Honestly i think they actually do exist look at the military. what about snipers they get paid for there ability to kill things at a distance and they are thrown back out into the world with all this training and no after thought to there well being you think about it. someone had to come up with the idea before the dummys in hollywood would be able to think of it because they have never had an original thought in there lives.

Most of it is fiction, but there's behind that. During the crusades, the Templars were the knights fighting for the holy land. The assassins, or by their actual name, hashashins, were mercenaries that lived in the holy land, except they didn't fight for money, but for loyalty to their master. They weren't on any side of the war, they just killed specific targets. Tha hashashins vanished after the war with the mongols years later, so assassins don't exist anymore. The artifacts don't axist, although their presence in the game fills the gaps in actual mythologies like the greek's, roman's, adam & eve, moses, etc.

yes they do exist it isn't just a Hollywood idea every government in the world will have a black ops unit which does its dirty work, they will hire sub contractors i.e assassins as there is no direct link and will do so as and when they need someone to have a accident, you then have your freelancer who will do anyone in for a price, people who kill for money have been around for a long time and will continue to do so, there is always a market for their services, the person who says the s.a.s needs to stop reading books

Yes, they exist all over the world, here in the US as well. However, they get a lot of business in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe, but the market here is good as well.

Yes, they really do exist, although not as portrayed in the movies. They're just big time losers, usually ex-cons or fugitives looking to make some quick cash.

It's a bit of both. Most "assassins" are paid military personell like snipers and such who DO have other things they do besides that. I'm sure that the government has people that they pay to do just this sort of thing. How do you think they find and kill high priority people?
