First you should never take the jewelry out of an infected piercing. It allows the hole to close up trapping the infection within the piercing. With the jewelry left in place infection has a route out for drainage.

You need to wait 6 to 8 weeks for them to heal, and if they don't feel like they are healed (you are the only one that knows your own body), wait a few more weeks. Did you have it done with a piercing gun? If so, you may want to consider having it done properly with a piercing needle, you'll have a faster healing time, less chance of infection, almost no chance of getting a disease (piercing guns are not sterilized!! whereas needles are), and less pain.

I got my ears pierced when I was 16, and i almost feinted trying to get them back in after the 6 week initial 'sleeper' period. One of the problems was that when I had the left ear done, the gun shot the earrig diagonally up, so it never came out the other side. She re-pierced it two minutes later in exactly the same place, but this time it went straight out to the back of the lobe. Because of her initial mistake, my ear became infected when I woudl try to reinsert the earring. It would go down the track of the diagonal piercing, so it never closed.

I left my ears because I got so annoyed with them that I lost all faith in it. For my 21st, my friends bought me loads of earrings (I don't think they realised I wasn't wearing earrings for a reason). The indendations from the holes were still visible. I tried an earring on the off-chance and discovered that the holes were still open (5 years later remember).

So, aside from my ignorance, I would say that as long as the infection has cleared up, and I mean REALLY cleared up, as in no pus for a couple of weeks, and you're cleaning them properly, try again whenever you want. If it starts to hurt, take them out again. Mine play up occasionally, and I find that if I swap my dangley earrings for studs for a week or so, or none at all, they're fine again soon after.

If it's already back to its original form having no irritaion or reddish colour on the surface or no itching there, you may pierce the same spot again. Why not delay by a few more days and in the mean time, just apply any anti sceptic onitment. This time you have to be little bit careful.Don't allow secondary infection to occur. Please use any anti sceptic ointment on the spot and even when you have your bath or a wash, don't allow soap to be there on the surface of the hole. After every wash a bit of such ointment will do.Within less than a week the spot will be fine with normal hole as you want.
The ointment for the purpose is Neosporin , I suggest.....just a little bit......seveal times a day.....because, it's winter....not a huge quantity.....just a little bit of it.OK?

God Bless

i would say about 1 month after it properly heals. although it may appear to be healed on the outside the inside has to heal also and that takes a little longer than the outside. my daughter ear got infected too. i got hers re-pierced after a month went by. it is OK and she do not have any problems out of that ear. i do recommend to you only wear real or hyper-allergenic type earrings at first because you wouldn't want it to get infected again.
