On front wheel drives it is best to have uniform traction on all 4 wheels. If you use studded tires you definitly must have all 4 studded. Otherwise you will do a 180 for no apparent reason suddenly. So if they are just all season tires with fresh tread you may still have that problem occur. I have had it happen to me twice before on my honda civic. However if your vehicle is a larger size then the circumstances may change. Ask a professional tire company what specs your vehicle is rated at. Ask three or four to gain answer that is same. That will be the right answer. I totally believe in my front wheel drives for excellent handling in ice and snow with 4 studded tires. They don't slide around and with feathering of the gas pedal I have always been able to manuver through snow ruts and dependible breaking straight on solid ice, snow packs and wet snow conditions. For the small cars. Honda civics, chevy geo's, etc.
